Word Meanings:

  • Wa qifūhum: Stop them, detain them, or hold them back.
  • Mas'ūlūn: Those who are to be questioned, held accountable, or called to answer.

Explanation of the Verse:

On the Day of Judgment, after the disbelievers and wrongdoers are gathered, Allah commands the angels to halt them before they can proceed to the Fire. They are to be stopped and detained, for they are to be questioned and held accountable for everything they did and said in the worldly life. This is not a mere formality, but a severe and humiliating interrogation—a rebuke that exposes their deeds, their words, their intentions, and their rejection of the truth. Every utterance they made, every action they took, and every moment they spent in arrogance or heedlessness will be brought before them, and they will be made to answer for it. Only after this reckoning will they be driven to the Hellfire.

This verse serves as a profound reminder that no one escapes accountability. The pause at that moment—before the final destination—is a scene of utter helplessness, where all excuses vanish and the truth becomes undeniable. It is a call to every soul to reflect: if the disbelievers are stopped and questioned, how much more careful should the believer be in guarding their words and deeds? The Qur'an repeatedly emphasizes that this life is a test, and the Day of Judgment is the moment of recompense. No deed, however small, is overlooked; no word, however trivial, is forgotten.

For the believer, this verse is both a warning and an invitation. It warns against negligence and sin, urging a life of mindfulness, repentance, and sincerity. It invites one to turn back to Allah before that Day arrives—when there will be no second chance, no plea for return, and no escape from the questioning. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "The feet of the son of Adam will not move on the Day of Judgment before he is asked about five things: his life and how he spent it, his youth and how he used it, his wealth and how he earned it and spent it, and his knowledge and what he did with it." (Tirmidhi)

So let this verse awaken the heart: stand firm in faith, speak with truth, act with righteousness, and prepare an answer for the questions that are inevitable. For the one who answers well in this life—by submitting to Allah and following His guidance—will find ease on that Day, while the one who turned away will face the bitterest of reckonings. May Allah make us among those who are questioned with mercy and admitted into His eternal bliss.

📜 Verse 22-26 — As-Saffat

[The angels will be ordered], "Gather those who committed wrong, their kinds, and what they used to worship
Other than Allah, and guide them to the path of Hellfire
And stop them; indeed, they are to be questioned."
[They will be asked], "What is [wrong] with you? Why do you not help each other?"
But they, that Day, are in surrender.
