Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "Man qaddama lana hadha" — "Whoever brought this upon us" — meaning: whoever led us to this (i.e., misguidance and disbelief) and was the cause of our being here.
  • "Dhif'an" — "Doubled" or "multiplied" — meaning an increase in punishment, doubled over and over.
  • "Fi al-nar" — "In the Fire" — meaning within the Hellfire itself.

Explanation of the Verse:

On the Day of Judgment, when the followers of disbelief and sin find themselves in the blazing Fire, they will turn to their Lord with a plea born of regret and anguish. They will say: "Our Lord, whoever brought this upon us — whoever misguided us in the worldly life, led us away from the truth after it had reached us, and caused us to enter this punishment — then increase his punishment in the Fire twofold, and multiply his torment without end."

This is a moment of utter despair and bitterness. The followers recognize that they were not the sole authors of their downfall; there were those who called them to evil, who beautified sin for them, who turned them away from guidance. And so, in their rage and sorrow, they ask Allah to double the punishment of those leaders of misguidance. This request is not out of mercy for themselves, but out of a deep sense of betrayal — they were misled, and they want justice against those who misled them.

Yet, this verse carries a profound warning for every person: be careful whom you follow, be careful whose words you accept, and be careful whose footsteps you tread upon. For on that Day, the followers will curse their leaders, and the leaders will disown their followers — but neither will escape the Fire. The Quran tells us that every soul is responsible for its own deeds, and that following someone into sin does not lessen one's own burden.

A Call to Reflection:

This verse is a mirror for our lives today. Every one of us has influence — over our families, our friends, our communities. Will we be among those who call others to goodness, to prayer, to honesty, and to the love of Allah? Or will we be among those who, by our words or our actions, lead others away from the straight path? The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever calls to guidance will have a reward like the rewards of those who follow him, without diminishing their rewards in the least. And whoever calls to misguidance will carry a burden like the burdens of those who follow him, without diminishing their burdens in the least" (Sahih Muslim).

So let this verse be a motivation for us to be bearers of light, not darkness. Let us be those who, by our character and our words, draw people closer to Allah — so that on that Day, we may find those we guided standing with us, not cursing us. And let us seek refuge in Allah from being among those who lead others astray, for the punishment of the Fire is severe, and the regret of that Day will be beyond measure.

May Allah protect us all from misguidance, and may He make us among those who call to His path with wisdom and beautiful preaching. Ameen.

📜 Verse 59-63 — Sad

[Its inhabitants will say], "This is a company bursting in with you. No welcome for them. Indeed, they will burn in the Fire."
They will say, "Nor you! No welcome for you. You, [our leaders], brought this upon us, and wretched is the settlement."
They will say, "Our Lord, whoever brought this upon us - increase for him double punishment in the Fire."
And they will say, "Why do we not see men whom we used to count among the worst?
Is it [because] we took them in ridicule, or has [our] vision turned away from them?"
