Word Meanings:
- لَا مَرْحَبًا بِكُمْ – "No welcome to you": an expression of rejection and disdain, meaning "you have no place here."
- قَدَّمْتُمُوهُ لَنَا – "You brought it upon us": you prepared and caused this for us.
- الْقَرَارُ – The place of settling and abiding permanently.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, we witness a bitter exchange between the misguided followers and their arrogant leaders in the depths of Hellfire. When the followers are cast into the blazing Fire, they address their leaders who had misled them in the worldly life. The followers say: "Rather, it is you who deserve no welcome here! You are the ones who brought this upon us—you introduced disbelief and sin to us, and you led us astray with your false promises and deceptive words. So this is an evil place to settle and abide."
The followers are essentially throwing the curse back at their leaders. When the leaders first entered the Fire and saw their followers arriving, they may have expressed some twisted form of "welcome" or acknowledgment—but the followers respond with utter contempt: "No welcome to you! You are the cause of our destruction." They recognize that their leaders were the originators of the misguidance, the ones who paved the path to Hell for them, and so they curse them in return.
The verse concludes with the powerful phrase: "So evil is the place of settling." This is a universal condemnation of Hellfire as a dwelling—no comfort, no relief, no end to suffering. It is the worst possible destination for any soul.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse carries a profound lesson for us in this life. It shows us the devastating consequences of leading others astray. Those who call others to falsehood, who spread corruption, who encourage sin—they bear not only their own burden but also the burden of those who followed them. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever calls to misguidance will carry the sin of it and the sins of those who follow him until the Day of Judgment."
But there is also the beautiful opposite: whoever guides others to goodness earns rewards multiplied. So let us be among those who call to truth, who lead others toward Paradise, not away from it. Let us be the reason someone finds the light of Islam, not the cause of their darkness. The choice is ours today—will we be a means of guidance or a means of destruction for others? May Allah protect us and make us from the guides to righteousness.
