Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Akhāfu" (أَخَافُ): I fear, indicating a deep sense of awe and reverence.
- "Aṣaytu" (عَصَيْتُ): I disobeyed, meaning to go against the commands of Allah.
- "ʿAdhāba yawmin ʿaẓīm" (عَذَابَ يَوْمٍ عَظِيمٍ): The punishment of a mighty day — referring to the Day of Resurrection, a day of immense terror and consequence.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah commands His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to declare openly to the people: "I truly fear, if I were to disobey my Lord, the punishment of a tremendous Day." This statement serves multiple profound purposes. First, it establishes the Prophet’s own humility and complete submission to Allah — even the best of creation, the most beloved to Allah, expresses fear of disobeying His Lord. Second, it is a direct response to those who called him to follow the religion of his forefathers, which involved worshipping other than Allah. The Prophet makes it clear that he would never abandon pure monotheism (Tawhid) for the sake of pleasing people, for he knows the severe consequences of associating partners with Allah or failing in obedience.
The "mighty Day" refers to the Day of Judgment — a day when the heavens will split, the mountains will crumble, and every soul will be held accountable for its deeds. The Prophet’s fear is not a fear of uncertainty, but a reverential awe born of deep knowledge of Allah’s majesty and justice. This verse teaches us that even the most righteous among us must remain vigilant in obedience, never becoming complacent in our worship.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, reflect on this beautiful lesson: if the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) — the most perfect of Allah’s creation, the one whose sins were forgiven — still feared disobeying his Lord, then how much more should we, with all our shortcomings, be mindful of our actions? This verse is not meant to instill despair, but rather to awaken our hearts to the reality of our relationship with Allah. It invites us to live with consciousness of Allah, to love Him sincerely, and to strive in obedience — not out of blind fear alone, but out of love that makes us want to please Him. The door of repentance is always open, and Allah’s mercy encompasses all things. Let this verse be a reminder that true success lies in submitting to Allah alone, and that the sweetness of faith far outweighs any temporary pleasure found in disobedience. Embrace the path of the Prophet and his companions — the path of pure worship, sincerity, and hope in Allah’s mercy.
