Key Words and Phrases:
- "Umirtu" (وَأُمِرْتُ): I have been commanded — indicating a divine order that is both obligatory and honorable.
- "Li-akoona" (لِأَنْ أَكُونَ): To be — signifying a state of being, not just an action, but an identity.
- "Awwal al-Muslimeen" (أَوَّلَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ): The first of those who submit — meaning the foremost in submission and surrender to Allah, and in this context, the first from his nation (Ummah) to embody this.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this noble verse, Allah instructs His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to declare to all people: "I have been commanded to be the first of those who submit." This command carries two profound meanings:
First, it is a command to sincere worship — to devote all acts of worship, devotion, and obedience exclusively to Allah alone, free from any form of polytheism or association of partners with Him. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was ordered to purify his faith and to make his entire life an expression of absolute monotheism (Tawheed).
Second, it is a command to precede others in submission — to be the first to surrender to Allah's will, the first to obey His commands, and the first to embody the very essence of Islam (which means "submission to Allah"). This is not merely about being first in time, but being first in excellence, first in sincerity, and first in devotion. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was to lead by example, showing his nation the path of complete surrender to Allah before calling others to it.
The verse also implies that the Prophet (peace be upon him) was commanded to distance himself from everything that is worshipped besides Allah — to reject all false deities and to declare his innocence from them. His submission was to be total, encompassing his heart, his tongue, and his limbs.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, reflect upon the beauty of this verse. The Prophet (peace be upon him) — the most beloved of creation to Allah — was still commanded to be the first in submission. This teaches us that no one is exempt from surrendering to Allah, and that the highest rank a human being can achieve is that of a "Muslim" — one who submits wholeheartedly to their Creator.
If the best of mankind was commanded to be the first in submission, how much more do we — who are in greater need of Allah's mercy and guidance — need to hasten towards sincere submission? Let this verse inspire you to examine your own heart: Are you truly submitting to Allah in all aspects of your life? Are you striving to be among the foremost in obedience, or are you content with being among the laggards?
The door of submission is open to everyone, and the reward for those who race towards it is immense. Allah loves those who compete in goodness, and He has prepared for His sincere servants what no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and what has never crossed the mind of any human being. So hasten towards your Lord with a heart full of sincerity, and be among those who submit — for that is the path to true success in this life and the next.
