Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Yatawaffa: Takes the souls (literally, "receives them fully").
  • Al-Anfus: The souls (plural of *nafs*), which are the spirits that give life to bodies.
  • Hīna Mawtihā: At the time of its death — the complete separation of the soul from the body, ending life.
  • Fī Manāmihā: In its sleep — a state where the soul is taken but not fully separated; the body remains alive, though the person loses consciousness and sensation.
  • Fa yumsiku: Then He withholds/keeps back.
  • Qaḍā ʿalayhā al-mawt: He has decreed death upon it.
  • Yursilu: He sends back/releases.
  • Ajalin musammā: A specified term — a fixed, known time (until death).

Tafsir (Explanation):

Allah — Glorified and Exalted — is the One who takes hold of souls at the moment of death, when the appointed term of a person’s life comes to an end. This is the greater death, the complete departure of the soul from the body. And He also takes hold of the souls of those who have not died — during their sleep. This is the lesser death, a partial taking of the soul, where the sleeper loses awareness of the world around them, yet remains alive.

Then, Allah withholds the soul of the one upon whom He has decreed death — that soul does not return to its body, and the person remains dead until the Day of Resurrection. As for the other soul — the one of the sleeper — He sends it back to its body, and the person wakes up to continue living until a specified, known term: the moment of their eventual death.

Indeed, in this taking of souls at death and during sleep, in this withholding of some and releasing of others, there are clear signs and profound lessons for people who reflect and think deeply. They come to realize that the One who controls life and death, who takes souls and returns them at will, is fully capable of bringing the dead back to life on the Day of Judgment for reckoning and recompense.

A Daʿwah Reflection:

Dear reader, pause and ponder this magnificent verse! Every night, as you lay your head to rest, your soul is gently taken by your Creator — a small taste of death. And every morning, when you wake, your soul is returned to you as a fresh gift of life. This daily cycle is not merely a biological phenomenon; it is a living lesson from your Lord. It teaches you that death is not the end, but a transition — just as sleep is a transition to wakefulness. The One who returns your soul to your body each morning is the very One who will raise you from your grave on the Day of Resurrection. So let this reflection fill your heart with gratitude, and let it draw you closer to the One who holds your life in His Hands. Wake up each day as if it were a new chance to worship Him, to seek His forgiveness, and to prepare for the eternal life that awaits you.

📜 Verse 40-44 — Az-Zumar

To whom will come a torment disgracing him and on whom will descend an enduring punishment."
Indeed, We sent down to you the Book for the people in truth. So whoever is guided - it is for [the benefit of] his soul; and whoever goes astray only goes astray to its detriment. And you are not a manager over them.
Allah takes the souls at the time of their death, and those that do not die [He takes] during their sleep. Then He keeps those for which He has decreed death and releases the others for a specified term. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought.
Or have they taken other than Allah as intercessors? Say, "Even though they do not possess [power over] anything, nor do they reason?"
Say, "To Allah belongs [the right to allow] intercession entirely. To Him belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. Then to Him you will be returned."
