Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Shufa'aa (شُفَعَاءَ): Intercessors; those who are believed to mediate or plead on behalf of others.
  • La yamlikoon shay'a (لَا يَمْلِكُونَ شَيْئًا): They possess nothing; they have no power or authority over anything.
  • Wa la ya'qiloon (وَلَا يَعْقِلُونَ): And they do not reason or comprehend; they lack intellect and understanding.

Tafsir (Explanation):

The verse addresses a profound error of the polytheists who, despite witnessing the absolute sovereignty of Allah, took idols and false deities as intercessors, hoping these beings would plead for them before Allah and secure their needs. In a tone of stern rebuke, Allah commands His Messenger (peace be upon him) to challenge them: "Do you take these as intercessors even though they possess nothing at all—neither for you nor for themselves—and they do not even comprehend your worship of them?" These idols are mere lifeless objects: they cannot hear, see, speak, benefit, or harm. They are utterly devoid of any power or intellect, so how could they possibly intercede for anyone? The verse exposes the sheer irrationality of placing hope in beings that are lower than the worshipper in awareness and capability.

This is a call to reflect: if you seek a mediator between you and your Lord, why turn to those who are themselves in need of everything? True intercession belongs solely to Allah, and none can intercede with Him except by His permission. The polytheists' reliance on their idols was built on nothing but conjecture and false assumptions, whereas the believer's trust is placed in the All-Knowing, All-Powerful Creator, who hears every supplication and responds to every sincere call.

Da'wah Reflection:

This verse is a beautiful invitation to purify your heart and direct your hopes solely to Allah. It reminds you that no matter how great a created being may seem, it remains utterly powerless without Allah's will. So why attach your heart to anything other than the One who owns everything? Turn to Allah directly—He is closer to you than your own jugular vein, and He loves to hear your prayers. When you call upon Him alone, you align yourself with the purest form of monotheism, the very essence of Islam, and you free your soul from the chains of false hopes and futile dependencies. Let this verse inspire you to abandon all forms of shirk, whether in worship or in reliance, and to place your complete trust in the One who never fails those who sincerely turn to Him.

📜 Verse 41-45 — Az-Zumar

Indeed, We sent down to you the Book for the people in truth. So whoever is guided - it is for [the benefit of] his soul; and whoever goes astray only goes astray to its detriment. And you are not a manager over them.
Allah takes the souls at the time of their death, and those that do not die [He takes] during their sleep. Then He keeps those for which He has decreed death and releases the others for a specified term. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought.
Or have they taken other than Allah as intercessors? Say, "Even though they do not possess [power over] anything, nor do they reason?"
Say, "To Allah belongs [the right to allow] intercession entirely. To Him belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. Then to Him you will be returned."
And when Allah is mentioned alone, the hearts of those who do not believe in the Hereafter shrink with aversion, but when those [worshipped] other than Him are mentioned, immediately they rejoice.
