Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Zalamoo (ظَلَمُوا): Those who wronged themselves through disbelief (shirk) and disobedience to Allah.
- Yaftadoo (يَفْتَدُوا): To ransom or offer a compensation to save oneself from punishment.
- Soo’ al-‘Adhaab (سُوءِ الْعَذَابِ): The severe, terrible torment.
- Badaa lahum (بَدَا لَهُمْ): It became apparent or manifest to them.
- Yahtasiboon (يَحْتَسِبُونَ): To expect, anticipate, or take into account.
The Interpretation:
Imagine the Day of Judgment: the sky is torn, the earth is flattened, and every soul stands before its Lord, awaiting the decree. On that terrifying day, the wrongdoers—those who associated partners with Allah and persisted in sin—will witness the reality of their deeds. They will realize, with utter despair, that the punishment awaiting them is beyond anything they could have imagined.
Allah tells us that even if these wrongdoers possessed everything on earth—every treasure, every mountain of gold, every precious jewel—and then were given double of that, they would willingly offer it all as a ransom to escape even the slightest touch of that severe torment. They would give everything they owned and more, hoping to buy their freedom. But no ransom will be accepted. No wealth, no power, no bargaining will save them. The punishment of Allah is not something that can be bought or traded away.
And then comes the most crushing revelation: "And there will appear to them from Allah what they had never anticipated." (39:47). They will see a reality of Allah’s justice, wrath, and recompense that they never even considered in their worldly lives. They lived in arrogance, mocking the warnings, thinking they were safe. They never calculated that their deeds would lead to this. They never expected that the consequences would be so severe, so overwhelming, so absolute.
This verse is a profound wake-up call for every soul. It tells us that the reckoning of Allah is beyond our limited comprehension. The pleasures of this world—no matter how vast—are worthless in the face of Allah’s punishment. And the mercy of Allah, which is even greater than His wrath, is available to us right now, in this life, through sincere repentance and turning back to Him.
Dear reader, do not wait until that day when you will wish you had given everything to save yourself. The door of repentance is open today. The mercy of Allah is nearer to you than your own jugular vein. Do not let the illusions of this world deceive you into thinking you have time. Return to your Lord now, with a sincere heart, and you will find Him forgiving, merciful, and loving. For on that day, the only thing that will benefit you is your faith, your good deeds, and the mercy of your Creator.
