📖 English Meaning
He created you from one soul. Then He made from it its mate, and He produced for you from the grazing livestock eight mates. He creates you in the wombs of your mothers, creation after creation, within three darknesses. That is Allah, your Lord; to Him belongs dominion. There is no deity except Him, so how are you averted?

Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Nafs (نَفْس): Soul/self — here referring to Prophet Adam (peace be upon him), the first human being.
  • Zawj (زَوْج): Spouse/partner — referring to Hawwa (Eve), created from Adam's rib.
  • An'am (أَنْعَام): Cattle/livestock — specifically camels, cows, sheep, and goats.
  • Azwaj (أَزْوَاج): Pairs — male and female of each species.
  • Zulumat Thalath (ظُلُمَاتٍ ثَلَاثٍ): Three layers of darkness — the darkness of the belly, the womb, and the placenta (membrane surrounding the fetus).
  • Tusrafun (تُصْرَفُونَ): Turned away/diverted — from the truth.

Explanation of the Verse:

O humanity, reflect on the magnificent beginning of your existence! Your Lord created you from a single soul — Adam (peace be upon him) — and from that same soul He created his wife, Hawwa, so that humanity would spread across the earth. He then blessed you with eight pairs of livestock — camels, cows, sheep, and goats — each created in male and female forms, as a provision for your sustenance and a sign of His mercy.

Then ponder the miracle of your own creation: you are formed in the wombs of your mothers, stage after stage — from a drop of fluid, to a clinging clot, to a lump of flesh, to bones, then clothed with flesh, until you emerge as a complete human being. All of this unfolds within three layers of darkness: the darkness of the abdomen, the darkness of the womb, and the darkness of the placenta. Every single stage is precisely orchestrated by the will of your Creator, who knows exactly what you need at each moment of your development.

This is Allah — the One who created all of this — He is your Lord. To Him alone belongs all sovereignty and dominion. There is no deity worthy of worship except Him. So how is it that you turn away from worshipping Him, and instead direct your devotion to created beings who cannot create even a single cell? What delusion leads you away from the One who formed you in the depths of your mother's womb, who provided for you before you could even ask, and who continues to sustain you with every breath you take?

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, let this verse awaken your heart. The God who fashioned you in such intricate stages, who brought you from nothingness to life, who placed you in the safest haven of your mother's womb — does He not deserve your gratitude and worship? Every beat of your heart is a testimony to His existence. Every breath you take is a gift from His boundless mercy.

Look at the livestock around you — the camel that endures the harsh desert, the cow that provides milk and meat, the sheep that gives wool and sustenance, the goat that thrives in rugged lands. All of these are signs pointing to a Wise and Merciful Creator who has subjected them for your benefit.

So why turn away? Why worship idols, stones, or human-made philosophies when the Creator of the heavens and the earth calls you to Himself? He is the One who owns everything, who controls everything, and who will judge everything. The path to Him is open — through sincere repentance, through reflection on His signs, and through submission to His will.

Do not let the distractions of this world blind you to the truth that is written in your very own creation. Return to your Lord, for He is the Most Merciful, the Most Forgiving. He created you, He sustains you, and He awaits your return with open arms.

📜 Verse 4-8 — Az-Zumar

If Allah had intended to take a son, He could have chosen from what He creates whatever He willed. Exalted is He; He is Allah, the One, the Prevailing.
He created the heavens and earth in truth. He wraps the night over the day and wraps the day over the night and has subjected the sun and the moon, each running [its course] for a specified term. Unquestionably, He is the Exalted in Might, the Perpetual Forgiver.
If you disbelieve - indeed, Allah is Free from need of you. And He does not approve for His servants disbelief. And if you are grateful, He approves it for you; and no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another. Then to your Lord is your return, and He will inform you about what you used to do. Indeed, He is Knowing of that within the breasts.
And when adversity touches man, he calls upon his Lord, turning to Him [alone]; then when He bestows on him a favor from Himself, he forgets Him whom he called upon before, and he attributes to Allah equals to mislead [people] from His way. Say, "Enjoy your disbelief for a little; indeed, you are of the companions of the Fire."
