Key Words and Phrases:
- Ta'dilū (تَعْدِلُوا): To be perfectly just and fair.
- Harastum (حَرَصْتُمْ): To strive earnestly and intensely desire something.
- Tamīlū (تَمِيلُوا): To incline or lean (in this context, emotionally or in treatment).
- Al-Mu'allaqah (الْمُعَلَّقَةِ): A suspended woman — one who is neither married (with her husband fulfilling her rights) nor divorced and free to marry another.
Explanation of the Verse:
O husbands, Allah addresses you with profound wisdom and mercy. He tells you that you will never be able to achieve perfect, absolute justice between your wives in matters of the heart — the natural feelings of love and inclination that are beyond your conscious control. Even if you strive with all your might to make your hearts perfectly equal, you will find this beyond your human capacity. This is not a command to do the impossible, but a compassionate acknowledgment of human nature.
However, this does not give you a license to neglect your duties. Allah immediately warns: "Do not incline completely [toward the one you love] and leave the other hanging." This means do not let your natural preference turn into injustice in your actions — in how you divide your time, your provision, your companionship, and your respect. Do not leave a wife in a state of limbo, neither fully married with her rights fulfilled, nor divorced and free to seek a better life. Such a state is a form of emotional cruelty that Islam abhors.
Then comes the door of hope and mercy: "And if you reform yourselves and fear Allah" — meaning if you correct your behavior, strive to treat your wives fairly in what you can control, and maintain consciousness of Allah in your dealings — then know that Allah is Ever-Forgiving, Most Merciful. He does not hold you accountable for the involuntary feelings of your heart, but He does hold you accountable for your actions. And when you sincerely try, seek His forgiveness for your shortcomings, and do your best, His mercy embraces you.
A Call to Reflection:
This verse is a beautiful example of Islam's realism and compassion. It does not demand from you what is beyond your nature, yet it elevates your responsibility to the highest standard of justice and kindness. Imagine the mercy of a religion that understands the human heart so deeply — it neither burdens you with the impossible nor leaves you free to oppress. Instead, it guides you to balance, sincerity, and God-consciousness.
Dear believer, let this verse inspire you to treat your family with fairness and gentleness. Remember that your wife is a trust from Allah. Even if your heart leans toward one more than another, your actions must remain just. And if you ever fall short, do not despair — Allah's mercy is vast, and His door of forgiveness is always open for those who sincerely reform and strive to do better. This is the beauty of Islam: it combines justice with mercy, and it always gives you a way back to righteousness.
