📖 English Meaning
And if a woman fears from her husband contempt or evasion, there is no sin upon them if they make terms of settlement between them - and settlement is best. And present in [human] souls is stinginess. But if you do good and fear Allah - then indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted.

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Nushuz (نُشُوزًا): The husband's aversion, harsh treatment, or turning away from his wife due to dislike or dissatisfaction.
  • I'rad (إِعْرَاضًا): Turning away, neglect, or indifference—such as withholding attention, affection, or financial support.
  • Junah (جُنَاح): Sin, blame, or legal burden.
  • Sulh (صُلْحًا): Reconciliation or mutual agreement to resolve differences.
  • Shuhh (الشُّحَّ): Greed, stinginess, or the innate human tendency to hold tightly to one's rights and possessions.

Tafsir (Explanation):

If a wife fears that her husband has developed aversion toward her—whether through harsh treatment, neglect, or a lack of desire to continue the marriage—there is no sin upon either of them to reach a reconciliation. This may involve the wife voluntarily waiving some of her rights, such as part of her maintenance or her share of nights, in exchange for keeping the marriage intact. Such an agreement, made with mutual consent and a willing heart, is permissible and carries no blame.

Reconciliation is better than separation. It preserves the sacred bond of marriage, protects the family unit, and prevents the pain of divorce. Islam, in its profound wisdom, opens this door of mercy so that couples may find a middle ground rather than falling into conflict or estrangement.

However, human souls are inherently prone to greed and selfishness. Each spouse naturally desires to hold on to their full rights and may resist compromise. This is a reality that both partners must acknowledge and strive to overcome through patience, generosity, and self-restraint.

If you treat your wives with excellence and kindness, and you remain conscious of Allah by fulfilling your duties and avoiding wrongdoing, then know that Allah is fully aware of all your deeds—whether open or hidden. Nothing escapes His knowledge, and He will reward you abundantly for every act of goodness and piety.

Da'wah Reflection:

This verse is a beautiful demonstration of Islam's care for the family—the very foundation of society. Allah, in His infinite mercy, does not leave spouses in deadlock when difficulties arise. Instead, He teaches us that compromise and forgiveness are pathways to peace and divine reward. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "The best of you are those who are best to their families." Let this verse inspire you to be a source of love, patience, and reconciliation in your own home. Remember that every act of kindness you extend to your spouse is witnessed by Allah, who never lets a single good deed go to waste. Embrace the spirit of sulh—not just in marriage, but in all your relationships—and you will find tranquility in this life and immense reward in the Hereafter.

📜 Verse 126-130 — An-Nisa

And to Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And ever is Allah, of all things, encompassing.
And they request from you, [O Muhammad], a [legal] ruling concerning women. Say, "Allah gives you a ruling about them and [about] what has been recited to you in the Book concerning the orphan girls to whom you do not give what is decreed for them - and [yet] you desire to marry them - and concerning the oppressed among children and that you maintain for orphans [their rights] in justice." And whatever you do of good - indeed, Allah is ever Knowing of it.
And if a woman fears from her husband contempt or evasion, there is no sin upon them if they make terms of settlement between them - and settlement is best. And present in [human] souls is stinginess. But if you do good and fear Allah - then indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted.
And you will never be able to be equal [in feeling] between wives, even if you should strive [to do so]. So do not incline completely [toward one] and leave another hanging. And if you amend [your affairs] and fear Allah - then indeed, Allah is ever Forgiving and Merciful.
But if they separate [by divorce], Allah will enrich each [of them] from His abundance. And ever is Allah Encompassing and Wise.
