Explanation of the Verse:
This verse unveils the true nature of the hypocrites—those who outwardly claim faith but inwardly harbor disbelief. They imagine they can deceive Allah Himself by presenting a false image of belief while concealing their rejection of the truth. But how foolish is this assumption! Allah, who knows every hidden thought and secret intention, is not fooled by their charade. Instead, He is the One who outwits them: He lets them enjoy a false sense of security in this world, protecting their lives and wealth due to their outward claims, while their ultimate punishment in the Hereafter is already prepared and certain.
Then the verse describes their relationship with worship, particularly the prayer. When they stand to pray, they do so with laziness and reluctance—not out of love for Allah or a desire to connect with Him, but merely to fulfill a social obligation or to be seen by others. Their prayer is hollow, performed for the eyes of people rather than the pleasure of their Creator. They seek admiration and approval, not forgiveness or closeness to Allah. As for remembering Allah, they do so only rarely and superficially—perhaps a few words when they feel observed by the believers, but never with a heart that is present or sincere.
The great scholar Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) beautifully noted: "If they had intended even that little remembrance for the sake of Allah, it would have been abundant." This means the issue is not the quantity of remembrance but the quality of intention. A small act done sincerely for Allah outweighs a mountain of deeds done for show.
A Call to Reflection and Sincerity:
Dear believer, let this verse be a mirror for your own heart. The hypocrites are not just a historical group—their traits can creep into any of us if we are not vigilant. Ask yourself: When you pray, do you rush through it, feeling heavy and uninterested? Do you lengthen your prayer when others are watching but shorten it when alone? Do you remember Allah only in public, but forget Him in private?
The cure for this disease is sincere intention (ikhlas). Purify your heart so that every action—especially your prayer—is done solely for Allah. Remember that Allah sees you at all times, whether you are in the company of people or in the solitude of your room. When you stand for prayer, stand with eagerness, as if you are about to meet the Most Merciful. Let your heart be present, and let your tongue remember Him often—not just a little, but abundantly, with love and humility.
For the one who truly connects with Allah in prayer, this life becomes lighter, and the Hereafter becomes brighter. Do not be like those who lose both worlds: they gain nothing from people’s praise in this life, and they lose Allah’s reward in the next. Instead, be among those who worship Allah as if they see Him, for even though they cannot see Him, He certainly sees them. This is the path of true success—a life of sincerity, a heart full of remembrance, and a prayer that elevates the soul to the heavens.
