Tafsir (Interpretation):
Have you not seen, O Messenger, the case of those believers who, before jihad was prescribed, were told: "Restrain your hands from fighting the disbelievers, and instead establish the prayer and give the zakah"? They eagerly asked for permission to fight, but when they migrated to Madinah and Allah made fighting obligatory upon them, a group among them changed completely. They began to fear the people — the disbelievers of Makkah — with a fear equal to their fear of Allah, or even greater. Their terror became so overwhelming that they cried out: "Our Lord, why have You made fighting obligatory upon us? If only You had delayed it for a short while so we could enjoy life a little longer!" Their hearts were attached to the fleeting pleasures of this world, and they shrank from the sacrifice that faith demands.
Say to them, O Messenger: "The enjoyment of this worldly life is but a small, passing thing — no matter how much one accumulates, it is finite and vanishes quickly. But the Hereafter, with its eternal bliss and everlasting rewards, is far better for the one who is mindful of Allah — who fulfills His commands and abstains from His prohibitions. And you will not be wronged even by the smallest amount — not even the thin thread inside a date pit. Every good deed you perform will be fully rewarded, and every sin will be justly accounted for."
This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer: the trials of this life, including the call to sacrifice and struggle, are but a test. The one who truly understands the reality of this world and the permanence of the Hereafter will never hesitate to answer the call of Allah, knowing that what awaits with Him is infinitely greater. So let your heart be attached to the eternal, not the temporary — and trust that Allah, in His perfect justice, will never let a single good deed go to waste.
