Word Meanings:
- Hasanah (حَسَنَة): Good, blessing, or any form of ease and prosperity that brings joy.
- Sayyi'ah (سَيِّئَة): Hardship, affliction, or any form of distress that brings sorrow.
- Min nafsik (مِن نَّفْسِكَ): From your own self — meaning, as a consequence of your own actions and sins.
Explanation of the Verse:
O human being, whatever good and blessing reaches you — whether it be wealth, health, children, or any form of comfort — it is from Allah alone, out of His pure grace and favour upon you. He bestows these gifts upon you not because you deserve them, but as a manifestation of His boundless mercy and generosity.
As for any hardship, difficulty, or affliction that befalls you — whether in your provision, your family, or your health — it is a direct result of your own actions. Your sins, your negligence, and your transgressions bring these trials upon yourself. Allah, in His perfect justice, does not wrong anyone; rather, it is your own deeds that return to you as consequences. This is a profound reminder that we must always hold ourselves accountable, examining our own conduct before blaming fate or others.
Then Allah addresses His beloved Messenger ﷺ directly: "And We have sent you to all of mankind as a Messenger." This establishes the universal nature of the Prophet's mission — he was not sent to a single tribe or nation, but to every human being on earth, from his time until the end of days. His message is a mercy for all worlds, guiding humanity out of darkness and into light.
And Allah concludes: "And sufficient is Allah as a Witness." This is a powerful reassurance — Allah Himself bears witness to the truthfulness of the Prophet's message. He has supported him with miracles, clear proofs, and the living miracle of the Qur'an itself. When Allah testifies, no further proof is needed. This should fill every believer's heart with certainty and confidence in the truth of Islam.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, this verse teaches us two beautiful truths. First, it invites us to recognise Allah's generosity in every blessing we enjoy — when you wake up healthy, when you eat your daily bread, when you embrace your loved ones — know that all of this is from Allah's favour upon you. Let this fill your heart with gratitude and love for your Creator.
Second, it calls us to self-accountability. When difficulties come, instead of complaining or despairing, look inward. What can you improve? What sins can you leave? This is not a burden, but a gift — for it means you have the power to change your situation by changing yourself. Turn to Allah in repentance, and He will turn your hardships into ease, your sorrow into joy.
And know that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was sent for you personally. His message is your path to success in this life and the next. Allah Himself testifies to its truth — so what more could you seek? Embrace this message with an open heart, and you will find peace that no worldly trouble can disturb.
