Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • يُطِعِ الرَّسُولَ – obeys the Messenger (peace be upon him) by following his commands and avoiding what he prohibited.
  • تَوَلَّى – turns away, rejects, or abandons obedience.
  • حَفِيظًا – a guardian, keeper, or one who watches over their deeds and holds them accountable.

Tafsir (Explanation):

Whoever obeys the Messenger Muhammad (peace be upon him) — by sincerely following his guidance, implementing his commands, and abstaining from what he forbade — has truly obeyed Allah Himself. This is because the Messenger does not speak of his own desire; his words are a direct reflection of divine revelation. His commands are Allah's commands, and his prohibitions are Allah's prohibitions. Therefore, obedience to him is obedience to Allah, and there is no separation between the two.

As for the one who turns away in arrogance or indifference, rejecting this guidance, do not grieve over them, O Prophet. You were not sent as a guardian over them to record their deeds or force them into faith. Your mission is solely to convey the message clearly and call to the truth with wisdom. Their reckoning rests entirely with Allah, who knows all that they conceal and reveal, and He will hold them accountable in His perfect justice.

This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer: true faith is not merely a verbal declaration but a lived reality through obedience to the Prophet (peace be upon him). It also brings comfort to the hearts of those who strive in Allah's path — they are not responsible for the outcomes of their efforts, only for the sincerity of their call. So let every Muslim rejoice in this beautiful connection: by following the Prophet, we are drawing closer to Allah Himself. And let those who turn away know that Allah is the ultimate Reckoner, and His justice is absolute.

📜 Verse 78-82 — An-Nisa

Wherever you may be, death will overtake you, even if you should be within towers of lofty construction. But if good comes to them, they say, "This is from Allah "; and if evil befalls them, they say, "This is from you." Say, "All [things] are from Allah." So what is [the matter] with those people that they can hardly understand any statement?
What comes to you of good is from Allah, but what comes to you of evil, [O man], is from yourself. And We have sent you, [O Muhammad], to the people as a messenger, and sufficient is Allah as Witness.
He who obeys the Messenger has obeyed Allah; but those who turn away - We have not sent you over them as a guardian.
And they say, "[We pledge] obedience." But when they leave you, a group of them spend the night determining to do other than what you say. But Allah records what they plan by night. So leave them alone and rely upon Allah. And sufficient is Allah as Disposer of affairs.
Then do they not reflect upon the Qur'an? If it had been from [any] other than Allah, they would have found within it much contradiction.
