Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- أَذَاعُوا بِهِ (adhaa'oo bihi): They spread it and publicized it widely.
- يَسْتَنبِطُونَهُ (yastanbitoonahu): Those who can deduce and extract the correct understanding from it — the scholars of deep insight.
- أُولِي الْأَمْرِ (ulil-amr): Those in authority — the people of knowledge, wisdom, and sound judgment.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This noble verse addresses a critical ethical and social principle in Islam: the proper handling of news and information, especially matters related to public security and safety. Allah describes the behavior of those whose faith is weak — the hypocrites — when they receive any news concerning peace, victory, or prosperity for the Muslims, or any news of fear, threat, or setback, they immediately spread it everywhere without verification or consideration of consequences.
The verse teaches us that when such information reaches them, they broadcast it recklessly, causing unnecessary alarm, confusion, or even harm to the community. Instead, Allah instructs that the correct approach is to refer such matters back to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and to those in authority — the people of knowledge, wisdom, and sound judgment. These are the individuals who possess the ability to deduce (istinbat) the proper course of action: what should be made public, what should be kept confidential, and how to respond appropriately in each situation.
This verse establishes a timeless principle of responsible communication: not every piece of information should be shared with everyone. There is wisdom in discretion, and there is great harm in recklessly spreading rumors or sensitive information. The scholars and leaders are entrusted with the duty of analyzing news and guiding the community with insight and foresight.
The verse concludes with a profound reminder of Allah's grace: were it not for Allah's favor upon you — by guiding you to Islam — and His mercy — by sending you the Qur'an and the Prophet — you would have followed Satan's whispers, except for a very few whom Allah had already guided before the advent of Islam, such as Zayd ibn 'Amr ibn Nufayl and Waraqah ibn Nawfal, may Allah have mercy on them.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse is a beautiful lesson in wisdom, responsibility, and trust. Islam teaches us to be careful with our words and to verify information before spreading it. In an age of instant communication and viral news, this guidance is more relevant than ever. Imagine how much harm is caused by spreading unverified rumors, and how much good comes from referring matters to those who truly understand.
This verse also reminds us of the immense blessing of Islam — a religion that guides us to the highest standards of conduct in every aspect of life. Allah's mercy has protected us from the whispers of Satan that lead to chaos and division. Let us embrace this guidance with gratitude, and let us strive to be among those who seek knowledge, practice wisdom, and protect the unity and security of our communities.
May Allah grant us the ability to follow this noble teaching and to be among those who bring benefit and safety to others.
