Word Meanings:
- Al-Bayyinat (بِالْبَيِّنَاتِ): Clear proofs, evident miracles, and unmistakable signs that demonstrate the truth of a prophet's message.
- Halaka (هَلَكَ): Died; passed away from this world.
- Musrif (مُسْرِفٌ): One who transgresses the limits set by Allah, exceeding the bounds of truth by indulging in falsehood and sin.
- Murtab (مُرْتَابٌ): One who is doubtful and skeptical about the Oneness of Allah and the truth of His messengers, never settling firmly on faith.
Explanation of the Verse:
Allah reminds the disbelievers of Makkah—and indeed all of humanity—of a profound lesson from history. Before Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him), Allah sent Prophet Yusuf (Joseph, peace be upon him) to the people of Egypt with clear signs, undeniable miracles, and a call to worship Allah alone without any partner. Yet, despite the clarity of his message and the truthfulness of his character, the people remained entrenched in doubt and suspicion regarding everything he brought them. They did not cease their skepticism during his entire lifetime. And when he eventually passed away, their doubt only deepened, and they audaciously declared: "Allah will never send a messenger after him." They assumed that divine communication had ended forever, closing the door to guidance and persisting in their disbelief.
This verse then delivers a universal principle: just as those people were led astray by their own arrogance and doubt, Allah allows misguidance to overtake anyone who is excessive in transgression and persistently skeptical of the truth. Such a person, by their own choice, turns away from Allah's signs and rejects His messengers, and Allah, in His justice, leaves them to wander in confusion, deprived of the light of guidance.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, ponder deeply upon this verse. The people of Yusuf had every reason to believe—they witnessed his truthfulness, his wisdom, and the undeniable signs Allah placed in his hands. Yet their pride and stubbornness blinded them. They did not merely reject the truth; they convinced themselves that no further guidance would ever come, closing their hearts to Allah's mercy.
This is a timeless warning for us all. Do not let doubt and arrogance harden your heart against the truth. When Allah sends you guidance—through the Qur'an, through sincere advice, or through the signs in the universe around you—embrace it with humility and openness. For Allah, in His infinite mercy, opens the doors of guidance to those who seek Him sincerely, but He leaves those who persist in transgression and doubt to their own devices.
O Allah, guide us to the straight path, protect us from doubt and excess, and grant us the certainty of faith that leads to eternal success. Ameen.
