📖 English Meaning
As for 'Aad, they were arrogant upon the earth without right and said, "Who is greater than us in strength?" Did they not consider that Allah who created them was greater than them in strength? But they were rejecting Our signs.

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Istakbarū – They behaved arrogantly and with haughty pride.
  • Bi ghayri al-ḥaqq – Without any right or justification; purely out of falsehood and transgression.
  • Ashaddu minnā quwwah – Stronger than us in power and might.
  • Yajḥadūn – They denied and rejected knowingly, refusing to acknowledge the truth.

Tafsir (Explanation):

As for the people of ʿĀd, the tribe to whom the Prophet Hūd was sent, they were blessed with immense physical strength, towering stature, and great resources. Yet instead of gratitude, they responded with arrogance. They exalted themselves in the land without any right, oppressing others and believing themselves to be above all. Their pride reached such a peak that they boldly declared: "Who is stronger than us in power?" — a statement born of sheer delusion and self-deception.

Allah, in His infinite wisdom, responds to their foolish claim by directing their attention to an undeniable truth: Did they not see that Allah, the One who created them and gave them that very strength they boasted of, is far mightier than them? The Creator of all power is, by necessity, greater than the power He grants. Yet they persisted in rejecting His signs — the clear proofs, miracles, and messages brought to them — not out of ignorance, but out of stubborn denial, for their hearts knew the truth while their tongues refused it.

This verse carries a profound lesson for every soul that ever feels self-sufficient or looks down upon others due to wealth, status, physical ability, or intellect. All strength belongs to Allah alone, and He can strip it away in the blink of an eye. The very breath you take, the muscles that move, the mind that plans — all are loans from your Creator. Let this be a reminder to remain humble, for the earth will one day swallow every tyrant, and the Mighty will judge every arrogant heart. Embrace humility, for it is the key to true honor in this life and the next.

📜 Verse 13-17 — Fussilat

But if they turn away, then say, "I have warned you of a thunderbolt like the thunderbolt [that struck] 'Aad and Thamud.
[That occurred] when the messengers had come to them before them and after them, [saying], "Worship not except Allah." They said, "If our Lord had willed, He would have sent down the angels, so indeed we, in that with which you have been sent, are disbelievers."
As for 'Aad, they were arrogant upon the earth without right and said, "Who is greater than us in strength?" Did they not consider that Allah who created them was greater than them in strength? But they were rejecting Our signs.
So We sent upon them a screaming wind during days of misfortune to make them taste the punishment of disgrace in the worldly life; but the punishment of the Hereafter is more disgracing, and they will not be helped.
And as for Thamud, We guided them, but they preferred blindness over guidance, so the thunderbolt of humiliating punishment seized them for what they used to earn.
