📖 English Meaning
[That occurred] when the messengers had come to them before them and after them, [saying], "Worship not except Allah." They said, "If our Lord had willed, He would have sent down the angels, so indeed we, in that with which you have been sent, are disbelievers."

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Min bayni aydīhim wa min khalfihim: From before them and from behind them — meaning from every direction, with messengers coming one after another in succession.
  • Alā taʿbudū illā Allāh: That you worship none but Allah alone.
  • Kāfirūn: Disbelievers, rejecters, deniers.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse takes us back to the story of the nations of ʿĀd and Thamūd, reminding us of a profound moment in history. When the messengers of Allah came to them — not just one messenger, but a succession of prophets arriving from every side, one after another, each carrying the same timeless call — they all delivered one message: "Worship none but Allah alone." The messengers came from before them and from behind them, meaning they left no excuse for the people, surrounding them with the truth from every direction so that no one could claim ignorance.

Yet, the arrogant disbelievers responded with a flimsy excuse, saying: "If our Lord had willed that we worship Him alone, He would have sent down angels from heaven as messengers — not human beings like us." They used this as a pretext to reject the truth, claiming that because the messengers were human, they could not accept their call. They then declared: "We disbelieve in what you have been sent with."

This was nothing but stubbornness and arrogance. They demanded something extraordinary while ignoring the clear signs and the sincere call of the messengers. They failed to realize that Allah, in His infinite wisdom, sends messengers from among humans precisely so that people can relate to them, learn from them, and follow their example. The messengers were not asking for any reward — they were simply conveying the truth out of mercy for their people.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, look at how the disbelievers of the past rejected the truth with weak excuses. Today, some people still make similar excuses to avoid submitting to Allah. They say: "If Allah wanted, He would have guided us," or "We need a miracle to believe." But the truth is that Allah has already sent His final messenger, Muhammad ﷺ, with the greatest miracle — the Qur'an — which remains preserved and unchanged to this day. The call to worship Allah alone is clear, and the evidence is overwhelming.

Do not be like those who closed their hearts and minds. Open your heart to the truth, for Allah has sent His messengers out of love and mercy for humanity. He wants you to succeed in this life and the next. The path is clear, the guidance is available, and the door of repentance is always open. Respond to the call of your Lord before it is too late, and taste the sweetness of faith that brings peace to the heart and light to the soul.

📜 Verse 12-16 — Fussilat

And He completed them as seven heavens within two days and inspired in each heaven its command. And We adorned the nearest heaven with lamps and as protection. That is the determination of the Exalted in Might, the Knowing.
But if they turn away, then say, "I have warned you of a thunderbolt like the thunderbolt [that struck] 'Aad and Thamud.
[That occurred] when the messengers had come to them before them and after them, [saying], "Worship not except Allah." They said, "If our Lord had willed, He would have sent down the angels, so indeed we, in that with which you have been sent, are disbelievers."
As for 'Aad, they were arrogant upon the earth without right and said, "Who is greater than us in strength?" Did they not consider that Allah who created them was greater than them in strength? But they were rejecting Our signs.
So We sent upon them a screaming wind during days of misfortune to make them taste the punishment of disgrace in the worldly life; but the punishment of the Hereafter is more disgracing, and they will not be helped.
