The Tafsir (Explanation):
Because the Children of Israel broke the solemn covenants they had made with Allah—covenants to believe in His messengers, uphold His Book, and follow His commandments—Allah cast them away from His mercy and sealed their fate with spiritual punishment. Their hearts became hard and unyielding, like stone that neither softens with reminders nor accepts the light of faith. This hardness of heart led them to a grave sin: they began to distort the words of Allah from their proper places. They twisted the meanings of the Torah, altering texts and misinterpreting revelations to suit their desires, especially concealing the descriptions of the final Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Moreover, they abandoned a substantial portion of what they had been reminded of—the commands and prohibitions, the glad tidings and warnings—leaving them unheeded and unpracticed.
O Prophet, you will not cease to uncover treachery from them. Their history is filled with broken promises, conspiracies, and betrayal—whether in their dealings with you or with the believers—except for a small, blessed group among them who remained true to their faith and upheld their covenants. These few are the ones who believed sincerely and did not follow the path of their deceitful predecessors.
So, O Prophet, forgive them for their mistreatment of you, and turn away from their faults with gracious pardon. Do not seek revenge or hold grudges, for this is the way of excellence in character. Indeed, Allah loves those who perfect their deeds and who respond to evil with goodness, for such beautiful forgiveness is among the highest forms of ihsan (excellence in worship and conduct).
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer: the sanctity of covenants and the grave consequences of breaking them. When a person or a nation betrays its promises with Allah and with people, the heart gradually hardens, and the light of guidance dims. Yet, in the same breath, Allah teaches us the beauty of forgiveness. Even when faced with betrayal and treachery, the believer is called to rise above revenge and embrace pardon, for Allah loves the doers of good. This is the noble character of Islam—a religion that combines justice with mercy, and truth with compassion. Let us hold firmly to our covenants with Allah, keep our hearts soft through remembrance and obedience, and adorn ourselves with forgiveness, for in doing so, we draw closer to the love of Allah and the success of both worlds.
