Explanation of the Verse:
Just as Allah took a solemn covenant from the Children of Israel, He also took one from those who claimed to be followers of Jesus (peace be upon him) — those who called themselves "Naṣārā" (Christians), claiming to be helpers of Allah. This covenant required them to worship Allah alone, believe in all His messengers, and follow the final Messenger when he would come. Yet, like their predecessors, they turned away and neglected a significant portion of what they had been reminded of. They abandoned essential teachings of the Gospel — including the clear tidings of the coming of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) — and instead altered their faith and divided into sects.
As a direct consequence of their breach of the covenant, Allah stirred up among their various factions mutual enmity and intense hatred that will persist until the Day of Judgment. Throughout history, Christian denominations have remained divided, each group declaring the other misguided, engaging in bitter conflicts and wars over doctrinal differences. Their divisions became a punishment for their deviation from the truth.
And Allah will certainly inform them of what they used to do — on the Day of Judgment, He will expose all their deeds and recompense them accordingly. This serves as both a warning and a solemn threat: no one who breaks Allah's covenant and corrupts His religion will escape accountability.
A Call to Reflection:
This verse carries a profound lesson for every seeker of truth. It shows that claiming to follow a prophet is not enough — what matters is sincere adherence to what that prophet actually brought. The Christians were not punished merely for their name, but for abandoning the very essence of Jesus' message: pure monotheism and obedience to Allah.
How beautiful it is when a person sincerely seeks the truth, wherever it may be found! The Gospel itself gave glad tidings of a final messenger to come — and that messenger is Muhammad (peace be upon him), who came with the final, preserved revelation. Allah's mercy has kept the Qur'an intact, unaltered, as a guiding light for all humanity until the end of time.
Let us learn from the mistakes of those before us: hold firmly to Allah's covenant, act upon what you know, and never let division and hatred creep into your hearts. For Allah's promise is true — He will ask us all about what we did with the knowledge He gave us. May Allah guide us all to the straight path and unite our hearts upon love and truth.
