Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Hukm al-Jāhiliyyah — The judgment, rule, or way of deciding matters that prevailed in the pre-Islamic era of ignorance, based on tribal customs, personal desires, and false superstitions rather than divine revelation.
  • Yabghūn — They seek, desire, or demand.
  • Yūqinūn — Those who have firm, certain faith; people whose hearts are settled in conviction and who truly comprehend the truth.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse poses a powerful, rhetorical question that strikes at the very heart of human choice: "Do they then seek the judgment of the times of ignorance?" The reference here is to those who turn away from the clear, just rulings of Allah and His Messenger, preferring instead the flawed, desire-driven systems of the pre-Islamic era — systems built on tribalism, oppression, and whim. The question is not a genuine inquiry but a rebuke, exposing the absurdity of preferring human conjecture over divine wisdom.

The verse then delivers a profound statement: "And who is better than Allah in judgment for a people who are certain?" This is both a declaration and an invitation. It affirms that no one — no ruler, no judge, no philosopher, no system — can surpass the judgment of Allah. His rulings are built on absolute knowledge, perfect justice, and boundless mercy. He knows what lies hidden in hearts, what serves humanity's true welfare in this life and the next, and His wisdom encompasses all times and places.

The verse concludes with a beautiful qualifier: "for a people who are certain." This is a gentle yet profound hint — that only those who possess true conviction (yaqīn) can fully appreciate the superiority of Allah's judgment. Such people do not waver between divine law and human whims; they recognize that Allah's guidance is the only path to genuine justice, peace, and salvation. Their certainty frees them from the confusion and corruption that come from following human desires.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, pause and reflect: every system of law and governance that humanity has devised — no matter how sophisticated — remains limited by human error, bias, and changing desires. But the judgment of Allah is eternal, unchanging, and perfectly just. It protects the weak, upholds the rights of the oppressed, and guides society toward harmony and righteousness. When you submit to Allah's judgment, you are not losing your freedom — you are gaining the highest form of liberation: freedom from the tyranny of your own whims and the oppression of others. This is the path of the believers who have tasted the sweetness of certainty. They know, with unshakable conviction, that there is no better judge, no wiser lawgiver, and no more merciful guide than Allah. So ask yourself: whose judgment will you trust with your life, your family, and your society? The answer, for those who truly believe, is clear and beautiful — the judgment of the One who created you, knows you, and loves you beyond measure. Embrace it, and you will find peace that no human system can ever provide.

📜 Verse 48-52 — Al-Maidah

And We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], the Book in truth, confirming that which preceded it of the Scripture and as a criterion over it. So judge between them by what Allah has revealed and do not follow their inclinations away from what has come to you of the truth. To each of you We prescribed a law and a method. Had Allah willed, He would have made you one nation [united in religion], but [He intended] to test you in what He has given you; so race to [all that is] good. To Allah is your return all together, and He will [then] inform you concerning that over which you used to differ.
And judge, [O Muhammad], between them by what Allah has revealed and do not follow their inclinations and beware of them, lest they tempt you away from some of what Allah has revealed to you. And if they turn away - then know that Allah only intends to afflict them with some of their [own] sins. And indeed, many among the people are defiantly disobedient.
Then is it the judgement of [the time of] ignorance they desire? But who is better than Allah in judgement for a people who are certain [in faith].
O you who have believed, do not take the Jews and the Christians as allies. They are [in fact] allies of one another. And whoever is an ally to them among you - then indeed, he is [one] of them. Indeed, Allah guides not the wrongdoing people.
So you see those in whose hearts is disease hastening into [association with] them, saying, "We are afraid a misfortune may strike us." But perhaps Allah will bring conquest or a decision from Him, and they will become, over what they have been concealing within themselves, regretful.
