Word Meanings:

  • Ghammrah (غَمْرَةٍ): Literally means "deep water" or "overwhelming flood." Figuratively, it refers to a state of being completely submerged in ignorance, heedlessness, or disbelief — a condition that covers the mind and heart like rising waters.
  • Sahoon (سَاهُونَ): Those who are heedless, neglectful, or oblivious — people who are distracted from what truly matters and fail to reflect or take warning.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse describes the doomed liars mentioned in the preceding verses — those who deny the truth and mock the promise of resurrection and judgment. They are people who have sunk so deeply into the murky waters of ignorance and falsehood that they have lost all sense of direction. Their hearts are sealed, and their minds are overwhelmed by the darkness of disbelief, arrogance, and worldly desires.

They are *heedless* — not merely forgetful, but actively negligent and indifferent toward the Hereafter. They do not pause to reflect on the signs of Allah around them, nor do they consider the consequences of their actions. They live as if this worldly life is all there is, drowning in their distractions, amusement, and false assumptions. They are so absorbed in their delusions that they do not even realize the danger they are in — like a person drowning in deep water who does not perceive the gravity of his situation until it is too late.

This verse serves as a profound warning to every soul: heedlessness is a gradual killer. When a person continually ignores the truth, his heart becomes covered, and he reaches a point where he no longer sees clearly. He becomes careless about his prayers, his duties, and his accountability before Allah.

A Call to Reflection and Awakening:

Dear reader, this verse is a gentle but firm wake-up call. It reminds us that the greatest loss is not the loss of wealth or health, but the loss of awareness of Allah and the Hereafter. The Qur'an repeatedly invites us to open our eyes, to reflect, and to return to our Lord before the waves of heedlessness overwhelm us completely.

The good news is that the door of repentance is always open. No matter how deep one has sunk into neglect, Allah's mercy is vaster. Take a moment today — right now — to step out of the "deep water" of distraction. Reconnect with your Creator through prayer, through reading His words, and through sincere remembrance. Let this verse be the spark that awakens your heart from its slumber, for truly, the one who wakes up in this life will not be among those who wake up in regret on the Day of Judgment.
