Word Meanings:
- Yas'aloon (يَسْأَلُونَ): They ask — specifically, the deniers and mockers among the disbelievers.
- Ayyaana (أَيَّانَ): When? — a question word used to inquire about a time, often implying something distant or uncertain in their minds.
- Yawm ad-Deen (يَوْمُ الدِّينِ): The Day of Recompense — the Day of Judgment when all deeds will be weighed and requited.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse exposes the attitude of those who reject the truth. They ask, "When will the Day of Judgment be?" — but their question is not born of sincere curiosity or a desire to prepare for it. Rather, it is a question of mockery and denial, uttered with arrogance and disbelief. They ask it as if challenging the very idea of accountability, as if to say, "If this day is real, then bring it on — when will it ever come?"
These people do not ask because they fear that day or wish to reform their ways. They ask while turning away from the truth, while living in heedlessness, and while refusing to act upon what they know. Their question is a reflection of their empty hearts — hearts that have closed themselves to guidance and chosen to mock what they cannot comprehend.
Yet, in this very question lies a profound lesson for the believer. The Day of Recompense is certain — it is not a matter of "if" but of "when." The One who created the heavens and the earth, who gave life and will take it away, has promised that this day will come. No one knows its exact timing except Allah, but its coming is an absolute certainty. The wise person does not waste time asking when it will be; rather, they prepare for it as if it may come at any moment.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, let this verse awaken your heart. Those who ask about the Day of Judgment in mockery will one day face it in reality — and on that day, their questions will turn to regret. But you, who have been given the gift of faith, have the opportunity to be among those who take this day seriously. Do not be like those who ask out of arrogance; instead, be like those who ask out of sincerity, seeking to understand so they may act. The Day of Recompense is nearer to each of us than we think — for every soul shall taste death, and then it shall return to its Lord. Let your question be: "What have I prepared for that day?" — for that is the question that truly matters.
