Word Meanings:

  • قُتِلَ (Qutila): Literally means "they were killed," but in this context it is a supplication of curse and destruction—meaning "may they be cursed and destroyed."
  • الْخَرَّاصُونَ (Al-Kharrasoon): Derived from *kharasa*, meaning to guess, lie, or fabricate. It refers to those who speak falsehood without certainty—the liars, the conjecturers, who make claims based on mere speculation.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse stands as a stern declaration of divine wrath upon those who fabricate lies and speak without knowledge. The "Kharrasoon" are the people who made false accusations against the Qur'an and the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), claiming he was a poet, a soothsayer, or a madman—utterly false claims born of stubbornness and ignorance. They are also those who deny the resurrection and the Day of Judgment, mocking the truth while drowning in their own delusions.

The verse pronounces a curse upon them: they are removed from Allah's mercy and left to their own ruin. Their destruction is sealed because they chose conjecture over certainty, falsehood over truth, and arrogance over humility. They are described elsewhere as being "in a flood of confusion, heedless" (Qur'an 51:11)—so deeply immersed in their disbelief that they are oblivious to the consequences awaiting them.

This is not merely a historical statement; it is a timeless warning. Anyone who knowingly distorts the truth, mocks divine revelation, or follows mere guesswork in matters of faith falls under this ominous shadow. The verse calls every soul to accountability: do not speak about Allah without knowledge, and do not let arrogance blind you to the clear signs of His power and mercy.

A Da'wah Reflection:

How merciful is Allah that He warns us before He punishes! This verse is a beacon of guidance—it tells us that the path to salvation lies in sincerity, humility, and the pursuit of truth. The Qur'an is not a book of guesses; it is a revelation of certainty from the Creator of the heavens and the earth. Open your heart to it, and you will find peace that no amount of speculation can ever provide. The liars of every era have perished, but the truth of Allah remains eternal. Choose the side of truth today, and you will never be among the losers.
