Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Sāhir (سَاحِرٌ): A sorcerer or magician — one who practices magic to deceive people.
- Majnūn (مَجْنُونٌ): Insane or possessed — a person whose mind is claimed to be deranged.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse draws a profound parallel between the rejection faced by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the treatment of all previous messengers. Just as the Quraysh of Makkah accused him of being a sorcerer or a madman, so too did the nations of old respond to their prophets with the very same accusations. No messenger came to a people before them — from Noah to Jesus, peace be upon them all — except that the response was identical: "He is a sorcerer" or "He is insane."
This is not a coincidence, but a consistent pattern of human stubbornness. When truth arrives in a form that challenges people’s comfort, their pride, and their established ways, they resort to dismissing the messenger rather than engaging with the message. Calling a prophet "mad" is an attempt to discredit his wisdom; calling him a "sorcerer" is an attempt to explain away the undeniable power of his words as mere illusion. Yet the Qur'an exposes this as a hollow excuse — for no sorcerer or madman could produce guidance that transforms hearts, reforms societies, and stands the test of time.
The verse also carries a quiet but firm consolation: the Prophet (peace be upon him) is not alone in his struggle. Every prophet before him walked the same path of rejection, and every one of them was ultimately vindicated by Allah’s victory. The disbelievers of Makkah were no different from those who came before — and just as Allah’s punishment overtook the earlier nations who persisted in denial, so too would it reach those who refused to believe.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, reflect on this: the enemies of truth have always used the same tired labels — "madman," "sorcerer," "liar" — because they have no real argument against the truth itself. When you encounter the Qur'an, do not let such labels from any era turn you away. Instead, test its message with an open heart: its wisdom, its justice, its mercy, and its profound impact on human life speak for themselves. The same Book that was once dismissed by a few has now illuminated the lives of billions across fourteen centuries. Truth does not need the approval of the arrogant; it simply needs a sincere seeker. And to every believer facing mockery for their faith, know that you stand in the noble company of all the prophets — and their patience was rewarded with the highest honour. So hold firm, for the promise of Allah is true, and His help is never far from those who trust in Him.
