Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Wayl (ويل): Destruction, ruin, severe punishment, or intense grief and misery.
  • Yawmihim (يومهم): Their day — referring to the Day of Resurrection.
  • Yoo‘adoon (يوعَدون): They are promised or warned — the threat of punishment that was communicated to them through the messengers.

Explanation of the Verse:

This concluding verse of Surah Adh-Dhariyat delivers a powerful and solemn warning: "So woe to those who disbelieve from their Day which they are promised."

The "Day" referred to here is the Day of Resurrection — the inevitable appointment that every soul will face. For those who rejected faith, denied their Lord, and belied His messengers, that Day will not be a day of hope or salvation, but rather a day of utter ruin and despair. The word "wayl" encompasses every form of destruction, sorrow, and torment — a comprehensive declaration of the fate that awaits them.

This verse serves as a final, emphatic conclusion to the surah, which throughout has presented signs of Allah’s power and mercy in creation, the stories of previous nations who were destroyed for their denial, and the certainty of divine justice. After all those evidences and warnings, this verse seals the matter: those who persist in disbelief have only to await their promised day of reckoning.

A Da‘wah Reflection:

How merciful is Allah that He does not seize the disbelievers immediately, but grants them respite and sends warning after warning through His messengers and His signs! This verse is not merely a threat — it is an invitation to reflect before that Day arrives. The door of repentance remains open until the final moment. Every soul that hears this warning has the opportunity to turn back to Allah, to embrace the truth, and to escape the "wayl" that awaits the heedless. Let this verse awaken hearts: the promised Day is certain, but so is Allah’s boundless mercy for those who return to Him before it comes. Do not let the warning pass you by — let it be the reason you draw closer to your Creator, for His forgiveness encompasses all who sincerely seek it.
