Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Dhanoob (ذَنُوبًا): A portion, share, or lot — specifically referring to a share of punishment or calamity. It is derived from the concept of a bucket (dhanoob) used to draw water, symbolizing a full measure of what is destined.
  • As-habihim (أَصْحَابِهِمْ): Their companions — referring to the previous nations who rejected their messengers and were destroyed.
  • Fala yasta'jiloon (فَلَا يَسْتَعْجِلُونِ): So let them not hasten — meaning they should not demand the punishment to come quickly, for it will surely arrive at its appointed time.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse delivers a profound and reassuring message to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and to all believers, while simultaneously serving as a stern warning to those who persist in wrongdoing. Allah says: "Then indeed, for those who have wronged [themselves by disbelieving and rejecting the truth], there is a portion of punishment like the portion of their companions [of old] — so let them not ask Me to hasten it."

The "wrongdoers" here are those who oppressed their own souls through disbelief, arrogance, and rejection of the message brought by the Prophet. They are promised a share of divine punishment that mirrors exactly what befell the nations before them — the people of Nuh, 'Ad, Thamud, Pharaoh, and others who rejected their messengers. This is not a vague threat but a certain promise from the One who never breaks His word.

The verse then addresses their impatience and mockery. When the disbelievers would challenge the Prophet, saying, "When will this punishment come if you are truthful?" — Allah responds that they need not rush or demand its acceleration. The punishment is decreed, fixed at its precise time in Allah's eternal knowledge, and it will descend upon them without fail. No power can delay it, and no plea can hasten it before its appointed moment.

This carries a beautiful lesson for believers: divine justice is inevitable. The apparent delay in punishment is not a sign of neglect but a manifestation of Allah's mercy and wisdom — giving people time to repent, reflect, and return to Him. Yet for those who persist in transgression, the promise of accountability is absolute.

A Call to Reflection and Repentance:

Dear reader, this verse invites you to ponder the fate of those who came before. Every tyrant who oppressed, every nation that mocked the truth, met their end — and their stories are preserved in the Qur'an as lessons for humanity. The same sun that rose over their destruction still rises today, and the same divine justice that overtook them is ever-watchful over our actions.

Do not be deceived by the apparent success of wrongdoers in this world. Their share of enjoyment is temporary, but the share of punishment that awaits them is certain. And do not be disheartened if you see evil flourishing while you struggle in faith — for Allah's timing is perfect, and His justice is never delayed beyond its wisdom.

This verse is also a source of immense comfort for the believers who face oppression and mockery. It assures them that their Lord sees every tear, hears every supplication, and has already recorded every deed. The victory of truth is guaranteed, and the downfall of falsehood is decreed.

So hasten to your Lord in repentance before the appointed time arrives. Turn to Him with a sincere heart, for He is the Most Merciful, the Oft-Forgiving. And let this verse strengthen your certainty that Allah's promise is true — whether in this life or the Hereafter, every soul shall taste the fruit of its deeds, and none shall be wronged even by the weight of an atom.
