Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- أَمْ (Am): Here it means "Or" — used for questioning and rebuke, not for choice.
- تَسْأَلُهُمْ (Tas'aluhum): You ask them (O Prophet).
- أَجْرًا (Ajran): A reward, payment, or compensation.
- مَغْرَمٍ (Maghram): A debt, fine, or financial burden imposed on someone.
- مُثْقَلُونَ (Muthqalun): Overburdened, weighed down heavily (with a load they cannot bear).
Tafsir (Explanation):
O Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, Allah is addressing you with a rhetorical question meant to console you and silence your critics: "Do you ask them — these disbelievers of Quraysh — for any payment or reward in return for delivering the Message of Islam to them?" The answer, of course, is an emphatic "No." You ask nothing from them whatsoever. You seek no wealth, no status, no compensation for the tremendous effort you put into guiding them.
So why then do they turn away from you? Why do they reject the truth you bring? Is it because they fear that accepting your call would cost them financially — that they would have to pay you some heavy tribute or incur a burdensome debt that they cannot afford? No! You have placed no such weight upon them. You demand nothing but their own good — that they worship Allah alone and follow the path of righteousness.
The verse exposes the absurdity of their excuses. They are not being asked to pay a single dirham. There is no "maghram" (financial penalty) imposed on them. Yet they behave as though they are "muthqalun" — crushed under an unbearable load of obligations that they claim they cannot carry. This is pure stubbornness and false pretense. The only "burden" they are asked to bear is the light yoke of faith — a burden that, in reality, brings peace to the heart and success in this life and the Hereafter.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, reflect on the beauty of Islam. The Prophet ﷺ and his companions endured hunger, persecution, and exile — all to deliver the message of guidance to humanity — and they never asked for a penny in return. Their reward was with Allah alone. This is the selflessness of true prophets and sincere callers.
So when you encounter the call to truth, do not imagine that it comes with a price tag. Islam asks you only to submit your heart to your Creator — and in return, you receive the greatest treasure: peace of mind, purpose in life, and eternal bliss in Paradise. What a fair trade! You give nothing but your arrogance and ignorance, and you gain everything that truly matters.
Let this verse be a reminder to all of us: the message of Islam is free, pure, and untainted by worldly motives. It is a mercy from Allah to humanity. Do not let false excuses keep you away from it. The only real burden is the weight of sin on your soul — and Islam is precisely what lifts that burden and sets you free.
