Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Alwāḥ (أَلْوَاح): The broad wooden planks that formed the body of the ship.
  • Dusur (دُسُر): The plural of *disār*, meaning the nails or pegs used to fasten and secure the planks together.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, Allah reminds us of His immense mercy and power through the story of Prophet Nūḥ (peace be upon him). After centuries of patient calling to his people, only a few believed, while the rest persisted in arrogance and denial. When the command of Allah came and the floodwaters burst forth from the earth and sky, Allah saved Nūḥ and the believers by carrying them upon a ship built of strong, broad planks, bound together with nails and fastenings. This was no ordinary vessel—it was a sign of divine craftsmanship, made sturdy enough to withstand the raging waves of the great deluge. Through this, Allah demonstrated His absolute control over creation: He who causes the storm also provides the means of safety. The ship became a floating mercy, carrying the faithful through a world submerged in punishment, while the disbelievers were drowned as a just recompense for their rejection of the truth.

Reflection and Call to Faith:

This verse is a profound reminder that Allah never abandons His righteous servants. When the world around you seems overwhelming, and trials rise like towering waves, know that Allah is capable of making a way out for you from where you least expect it—just as He turned simple wood and nails into a vessel of salvation. The story of Nūḥ teaches us that faith, patience, and trust in Allah are the true lifeboats. It also serves as a warning: the same waters that carried the believers to safety became the means of destruction for the disbelievers. So, hold fast to your faith, for Allah’s promise is true—He protects those who believe and act righteously, and His help is always near. Let this verse inspire you to seek refuge in Allah in every storm of life, for He is the Best of Protectors and the Most Merciful.

📜 Verse 11-15 — Al-Qamar

Then We opened the gates of the heaven with rain pouring down
And caused the earth to burst with springs, and the waters met for a matter already predestined.
And We carried him on a [construction of] planks and nails,
Sailing under Our observation as reward for he who had been denied.
And We left it as a sign, so is there any who will remember?
