Word Meanings:

  • Ashyā'akum (أَشْيَاعَكُمْ): Your likes, counterparts, or those who resembled you in disbelief and wrongdoing from previous nations.
  • Muddakir (مُدَّكِر): One who remembers, takes heed, and draws a lesson from what has happened.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this profound verse, Allah addresses the disbelievers of Makkah and every generation that follows in their footsteps, declaring: "And indeed, We have destroyed your likes and counterparts — those who came before you and shared your path of denial, arrogance, and transgression." The mighty nations of ʿĀd, Thamūd, the people of Nūḥ, and others who rejected their messengers with the same stubbornness and pride were wiped out entirely. Their fortresses, their wealth, their armies, and their numbers could not protect them from Allah's punishment when His decree arrived.

Then comes the striking rhetorical question: "So is there anyone who will remember?" This is not merely a question — it is a powerful call to consciousness, an awakening for every soul that reads or hears these words. It invites you to pause, reflect, and ask yourself: What happened to those who came before me? Where are their palaces and their power now? If Allah destroyed them for their disbelief, what makes me think I am safe? This verse is a divine summons to take a lesson from history, to let the fate of past nations serve as a warning beacon, and to turn back to Allah before it is too late.

A Daʿwah Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse is a mercy wrapped in a warning. Allah does not wish to destroy you — He is telling you this story so that you may live. He is showing you the ruins of those who rejected Him so that you may build your eternity with Him. The door of repentance is open, and the call "Is there anyone who will remember?" is extended to you personally. Be that one who remembers! Let the fate of past nations soften your heart, let it guide you to the straight path, and let it fill you with gratitude that you have been given the chance to know the truth and act upon it. Every moment you have now is a golden opportunity — seize it before the opportunity slips away. The One who destroyed the tyrants of old is the same One who welcomes His servants with open arms when they return to Him. So return, and be among those who remember.

📜 Verse 49-53 — Al-Qamar

Indeed, all things We created with predestination.
And Our command is but one, like a glance of the eye.
And We have already destroyed your kinds, so is there any who will remember?
And everything they did is in written records.
And every small and great [thing] is inscribed.
