Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Phrases:
- "And a few" (wa qaleelun): A small number, indicating scarcity and distinction.
- "From the later ones" (mina al-akhireen): Refers to the later generations, specifically the followers of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in the context of this verse.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse continues the description of the foremost believers (al-sabiqoon) who will be nearest to Allah in Paradise. After mentioning that a large group of these foremost believers will come from the earlier nations—such as the followers of previous prophets—Allah states that only a few will come from the later generations, meaning the Ummah (nation) of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
This "fewness" is relative to the vast number of earlier nations combined, not a reflection of the absolute number of Muslims entering Paradise. In fact, the total number of believers from this Ummah will be immense, but when compared to the cumulative multitudes of all previous nations, they appear as a smaller group. Some scholars interpret "the earlier ones" as the early generations of this Ummah (the Companions and their successors) and "the later ones" as the later generations of this Ummah—meaning that among the foremost believers, the early generation will be more numerous, while the later generations will have fewer who reach that highest rank.
This highlights the virtue of the early Muslims and the honor of being among the foremost, while also encouraging later generations to strive for excellence in faith and deeds, even if they are few in number.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse is a beautiful reminder that Allah honors those who race toward goodness, regardless of the era they live in. The "few" are not few in value—they are the elite, the chosen ones who excel in sincerity, devotion, and righteousness. As a Muslim, you have the opportunity to be among these distinguished souls, even in the later times. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "The best of people are those who live in my generation, then those who follow them, then those who follow them." Yet, he also said: "Glad tidings to the strangers—those who reform what the people have corrupted of my Sunnah." So, do not be discouraged by being in the minority when it comes to truth and piety. Be among the few who uphold the highest standards of faith, for their reward with Allah is immense and their rank in Paradise is sublime. Strive to be from the "foremost" by purifying your heart, perfecting your worship, and spreading goodness—so that you may be among those who are nearest to Allah, reclining on adorned couches, facing one another in love and eternal bliss.
