Word Meanings:

  • Laghwan (لَغْوًا): Falsehood, vain talk, or any speech that is meaningless, frivolous, or sinful.
  • Ta'thīman (تَأْثِيمًا): Speech that causes one to incur sin, or words that involve blame, insult, or harm leading to guilt.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this blessed verse, Allah describes the pure and exalted atmosphere of Paradise, where the believers will be free from all that tarnishes speech and disturbs the soul. The inhabitants of Paradise will not hear any vain or worthless talk — no idle chatter, no lies, no mockery, and no empty words that carry no benefit. Nor will they hear anything that causes sin or blame — no insults, no backbiting, no hurtful remarks, and no speech that would burden the heart with guilt or regret.

Rather, their hearing will be filled only with what is pure, wholesome, and delightful: the greetings of peace (salām) exchanged among themselves, the praises of Allah, and words that bring joy and tranquility to the heart. This is a profound blessing, for in this worldly life, our ears are often assailed by harmful speech — gossip, slander, and vain arguments — which weary the soul and distract the heart from what truly matters. In Paradise, Allah grants His righteous servants complete peace of mind, where even the very soundscape is purified, and every word heard is a source of comfort and happiness.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear believer, this verse invites you to reflect on the immense mercy of Allah. He not only promises you gardens of bliss and rivers of delight, but He also promises you a life free from the harm of careless words — a life where your ears, your heart, and your soul are at total ease. This should inspire you to strive for that eternal home by guarding your own tongue in this world. If you wish to taste that purity, begin now by avoiding vain talk and hurtful speech, and fill your conversations with remembrance of Allah, kind words, and beneficial knowledge. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him speak good or remain silent." So let this verse be a reminder that the path to Paradise begins with the words you choose today. May Allah make us among those who hear only what is good, and who speak only what is better.
