- Matā‘an (مَتَاعًا): A benefit, utility, or provision for enjoyment and use.

Explanation of the Verse:
In this profound verse, Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) draws our attention to the fire that we see and use every day, reminding us that He alone is the One who created it and placed within it these two great purposes.
First, He made fire a reminder — a vivid, tangible sign that points to the reality of the Hellfire awaiting those who reject His message and persist in disobedience. Just as you see the flames leaping and consuming, imagine the intensity of the Fire of the Hereafter, which is far hotter and more severe. This earthly fire, with all its heat and power, is but a faint glimpse of what Allah has prepared for the wrongdoers. So let every flame you witness — whether the spark of a match, the blaze of a campfire, or the glow of an oven — serve as a wake-up call, pulling your heart toward repentance and turning you back to your Lord before that Day arrives when no repentance will be accepted.
Second, He made fire a convenience and benefit for travelers — those who journey through empty, desolate lands where no civilization or shelter exists. In such harsh conditions, fire becomes a lifeline: it provides warmth against the cold night, cooks their food, lights their path, and wards off wild beasts. This is a mercy from Allah, who did not leave His servants without means of survival in the most challenging circumstances. He placed this utility within the very element that could otherwise be destructive, showing His perfect wisdom and care for humanity.
So reflect, dear reader: the same fire that can burn and destroy is also a source of light, warmth, and nourishment. This duality is a sign of Allah’s absolute power and His boundless mercy. He is the One who created it, and He alone controls its benefits and harms. How then can we turn away from His worship, or fail to thank Him for the countless blessings He has placed at our disposal?
Let this verse inspire you to look at the ordinary things around you with the eyes of faith. The fire you use daily is not merely a physical phenomenon — it is a divine lesson and a gift. It reminds you of the Hereafter, urging you to prepare for it, and it provides for your needs in this world, inviting you to gratitude. So praise Allah for His favors, and let the reminder of the Fire draw you closer to His mercy, that you may be among those who are saved from its heat and admitted into His eternal Paradise.
