Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Ansha'tum (أَنشَأْتُمْ): Did you create, bring into existence, or originate?
  • Shajarataha (شَجَرَتَهَا): Its tree — referring to the tree from which fire is struck or kindled.
  • Al-Munshi'oon (الْمُنشِئُونَ): The Creators, the Originators, the Ones who bring it into being.

Tafsir (Explanation):

In this profound verse, Allah turns the attention of humanity to one of the most essential and everyday elements of life: fire. He asks, "Have you considered the fire you kindle? Is it you who created its tree, or are We the Creator?"

The verse refers to the specific type of wood — such as the 'afār or markh trees — from which sparks are struck to produce fire. These trees, found in arid deserts, contain a flammable substance that ignites easily when struck. Allah reminds us that no human being has the power to create even a single tree, let alone the complex chemical properties that make it capable of producing fire. Who placed that combustible essence within the wood? Who designed the tree to grow in harsh conditions and still serve as a source of light and warmth? It is Allah alone — the Originator of all things — Who brought this tree into existence, nurtured it, and endowed it with this remarkable quality.

The rhetorical question is a powerful reminder of human dependence on Allah. You did not create the tree, nor did you design its properties. You merely strike two pieces of wood together and fire appears — but the entire system behind it is the work of the Almighty. This is a call to reflect on the countless blessings that surround us, which we often take for granted. The fire that cooks your food, warms your home, and lights your path is a gift from Allah, sustained by His will at every moment.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, pause and ponder: if you cannot create even a single tree that produces fire, how can you claim independence from your Creator? The One who provides fire from green wood is the same One who provides for your every need. This verse invites you to look at the simplest things in your life and see the hand of Allah at work. When you strike a match or light a stove, remember that the ability to produce fire is a divine gift — a sign of Allah's mercy and power. Let this realization draw you closer to Him, fill your heart with gratitude, and inspire you to submit to the One who created you, sustains you, and will one day bring you back to Him. Indeed, in every spark of fire lies a lesson for those who reflect.

📜 Verse 70-74 — Al-Waqi'ah

If We willed, We could make it bitter, so why are you not grateful?
And have you seen the fire that you ignite?
Is it you who produced its tree, or are We the producer?
We have made it a reminder and provision for the travelers,
So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great.
