Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Bā’isanā (بَأْسَنَا): Our severe punishment and torment.
- Takhruṣūn (تَخْرُصُونَ): You are lying and making false claims without any basis.
Tafsir (Explanation):
The polytheists, when confronted with the truth, will resort to a desperate argument: "If Allah had willed, neither we nor our forefathers would have associated partners with Him, nor would we have forbidden anything." They use the divine will as a shield to justify their shirk (polytheism) and their self-invented prohibitions, such as declaring certain cattle and crops unlawful without any revelation from Allah.
Allah refutes this feeble excuse by revealing that this very argument was used by nations before them. Those earlier peoples also claimed that if Allah had willed, they would not have rejected their messengers — yet they persisted in their disbelief until they tasted His severe punishment. This historical pattern proves that their claim is nothing but a hollow pretext, for divine will does not negate human responsibility and accountability.
Then Allah commands His Prophet ﷺ to challenge them: "Do you have any certain knowledge or proof that Allah is pleased with your shirk and your self-made prohibitions? If so, bring it forth and show us!" The mere occurrence of something does not imply divine approval. They follow nothing but conjecture, and conjecture can never stand in place of truth. In reality, they are nothing but liars who fabricate falsehood against Allah.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse carries a profound lesson for every seeker of truth. The polytheists' excuse — blaming destiny for their sins — is as old as humanity itself. Yet Allah makes it clear that His will does not override our moral responsibility. He gave us intellect, messengers, and scriptures to guide us; the choice to obey or disobey remains ours.
How beautiful is Islam's logic! It does not accept blind following of ancestors, nor does it allow people to hide behind fate. Instead, it calls upon every soul to seek knowledge, to reflect, and to submit willingly to the Creator. The door of repentance is always open — no matter how far one has strayed, Allah's mercy is greater. Come back to the straight path, for the punishment that befell previous nations is a warning, but the mercy of Allah is an even greater invitation. Do not let conjecture and false hopes deceive you; seek certainty through the Qur'an and the authentic Sunnah, and you will find peace in this life and the next.
