- Ḥanīfan (حَنِيفًا): Inclining away from all falsehood toward the truth — pure monotheism, free from any association of partners with Allah.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this noble verse, Allah commands His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to declare to the disbelievers who rejected the truth and called him to their false ways: "Say: Indeed, my Lord has guided me to a straight path." This is a statement of certainty and confidence — the Prophet is not guessing or following inherited tradition; he has been divinely guided by the Creator Himself through revelation and inspiration.
This straight path is described as "a religion that is upright" — meaning it is firm, balanced, and perfectly suited to the needs of humanity in both worldly affairs and spiritual matters. It is not a religion of extremism or negligence, but one of justice, mercy, and wisdom. It establishes the rights of Allah, the rights of people, and the rights of the soul in perfect harmony.
The verse then clarifies that this upright religion is none other than "the creed of Abraham" — the same pure monotheism that the father of the prophets called to. Abraham (peace be upon him) was a man who turned away from the idolatry of his people and submitted wholly to Allah. And crucially, the verse adds: "and he was not of the polytheists." This is a decisive refutation of the claim that Abraham followed the idolatrous practices of the Arabs. Abraham was a pure monotheist, and so is the religion of Muhammad (peace be upon him) — a continuation and completion of that same pristine message.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, this verse carries a profound lesson for every soul. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was guided by his Lord to a path that is straight — no crookedness, no confusion, no contradiction. This is the path of Islam: a complete way of life that brings peace to the heart, justice to society, and success in the Hereafter.
Today, as you read these words, know that the same guidance is available to you. Allah has not left you without direction. He has sent His final revelation, the Qur'an, and His final Messenger to show you the way. The path is clear, the signs are evident, and the call is open. Will you not respond to the One who created you, who sustains you, and who guides you to what is best for you in this life and the next?
The Prophet's declaration is a declaration of honor and pride in this straight path. It is an invitation for you to share in that honor. The door of repentance is open, the mercy of Allah is vast, and the path of Abraham — the path of pure submission to the One God — is waiting for you. Do not delay, for the greatest loss is to know the truth and turn away from it. Embrace this straight path, and you will find peace in this world and eternal bliss in the Hereafter.
