Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Malak (مَلَك): An angel, a celestial being created by Allah from light, who carries out His commands without disobedience.
- Laqudiya al-amr (لَقُضِيَ الْأَمْرُ): The matter would have been decisively settled—meaning the punishment would have been carried out immediately.
- Yuntharun (يُنظَرُونَ): They would be granted a delay or respite—here, it means they would not be given any time to repent or escape.
Tafsir (Explanation):
The disbelievers of Makkah, in their stubbornness and arrogance, kept demanding signs to prove the truth of Prophet Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) message. Among their demands, they said: "Why was an angel not sent down to him?"—meaning, they wanted a visible angel to accompany the Prophet and testify to his truthfulness, so they could see him with their own eyes and hear him speak. They imagined this would make belief easier for them.
Allah responded to their demand with a profound and decisive reply: If We had sent down an angel as they requested, the matter would have been settled once and for all—but not in the way they hoped. The established divine law is that when a people demand a sign of this magnitude and then still refuse to believe, they are destroyed immediately, as was the case with previous nations who challenged their prophets with similar demands. Their fate would have been sealed: they would have been annihilated on the spot, with no chance to repent, no delay, and no second opportunity.
This verse carries a powerful lesson for every seeker of truth: the signs of Allah are already abundant—the Qur'an itself, the Prophet’s impeccable character, and the countless miracles of creation around us. Demanding more signs is not a sign of sincere faith but often a pretext for continued rejection. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has kept the door of repentance open for this Ummah until the final hour. He did not send the angel they demanded, precisely because He wanted to give them—and all of humanity—time to turn back to Him.
So, dear reader, do not be like those who ask for signs while ignoring the signs already before them. Open your heart to the Qur'an, reflect on its verses, and you will find that the greatest sign of all is the guidance that leads you from darkness to light. Allah’s mercy is vast, and His door of repentance remains open—seize it before the angel of death arrives, for after that, there is no delay and no return.
