Meanings of Key Words:

  • "Malakan" (مَلَكًا): An angel.
  • "Rajulan" (رَجُلًا): A man, in human form.
  • "Labasna" (لَلَبَسْنَا): We would have confused, obscured, or mixed up the matter.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this profound verse, Allah addresses a persistent doubt raised by the disbelievers of Makkah. They questioned why the Messenger sent to them was a human being rather than an angel, demanding that an angel be sent down to them directly. Allah responds by revealing the wisdom behind His choice and the inherent contradiction in their demand.

Allah says: If We had sent an angel as the Messenger to them, We would have still sent him in the form of a man, because human beings are simply unable to see angels in their true, divinely-created form. The human eye and mind cannot bear the direct sight of an angelic being. Therefore, the angel would have had to appear in human shape so that people could see him, hear him, and learn from him directly.

Yet, even then, the confusion would not have ended. If the angel came in the form of a man, the disbelievers would have faced the same doubt they had with Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him): Is this truly an angel, or just another human being? They would have been just as perplexed and uncertain, because they could not perceive the angelic reality behind the human appearance. Thus, Allah points out that their demand was not a sincere search for truth, but rather an excuse to reject the message, no matter what form the Messenger took.

This verse beautifully illustrates the mercy and wisdom of Allah in sending human messengers. Since humans live in this world and interact with one another, it is only fitting that the Messenger be a human being who can relate to their struggles, speak their language, and serve as a living example of how to live righteously. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was a man among men—he ate, walked in the markets, faced hardship, and showed patience—so that his life could be a practical guide for all of humanity.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse invites you to ponder the profound wisdom of Allah's choices. He knows what is best for His creation, and He sent the final Messenger as a human being precisely so that you can follow his example in every aspect of your life. The Prophet's humanity is not a weakness; it is a mercy. It means that his teachings are attainable, his character is imitable, and his path is walkable. So, do not let doubts cloud your heart—embrace the guidance that came through a man who was chosen by the Lord of the Worlds, and let his example illuminate your journey toward Allah.

📜 Verse 7-11 — Al-An'am

And even if We had sent down to you, [O Muhammad], a written scripture on a page and they touched it with their hands, the disbelievers would say, "This is not but obvious magic."
And they say, "Why was there not sent down to him an angel?" But if We had sent down an angel, the matter would have been decided; then they would not be reprieved.
And if We had made him an angel, We would have made him [appear as] a man, and We would have covered them with that in which they cover themselves.
And already were messengers ridiculed before you, but those who mocked them were enveloped by that which they used to ridicule.
Say, "Travel through the land; then observe how was the end of the deniers."
