Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "That" (dhalika): Refers to the great honor and blessing mentioned in the preceding verses—the sending of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as a messenger to the unlettered Arabs and to all of humanity.
  • "Grace/Favor" (fadl): The abundant bounty, mercy, and generosity that Allah bestows upon whom He wills.
  • "The Tremendous Grace" (al-fadl al-ʿaẓim): The infinite, unmatched bounty of Allah, which encompasses all forms of goodness and excellence.

Explanation of the Verse:

This noble verse comes as a profound conclusion to the preceding verses, where Allah described His great blessing of raising a messenger from among the unlettered Arabs—one who recites His verses, purifies souls, and teaches the Book and wisdom. Now, Allah declares: "That is the grace of Allah; He grants it to whom He wills."

The "that" refers to the immense honor of prophethood and the mission of Muhammad (peace be upon him)—a favor so great that no human effort could achieve it, and no personal merit could earn it. It is purely a gift from Allah, the All-Wise, who chooses for this noble task whom He pleases from among His creation. This was not a random choice, but a divine selection based on Allah's perfect knowledge of who is most worthy.

Then Allah adds: "And Allah is the Possessor of the Tremendous Grace." This is a beautiful affirmation that Allah's bounty knows no limits. His grace is not confined to what we see or know—it encompasses everything: the sending of prophets, the revelation of scriptures, the guidance of hearts, the forgiveness of sins, and the promise of Paradise. From His immense grace, He chose to send this final messenger to all of humanity—Arabs and non-Arabs alike—as a mercy to the worlds.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, ponder deeply on this verse! If Allah has granted such a tremendous favor to humanity by sending this final messenger, then how grateful should we be? This grace is not limited to the past—it extends to you and me today. The very fact that you are reading these words, that the Quran has reached you, and that you have the opportunity to know your Creator—this is all part of Allah's tremendous grace upon you.

So seize this opportunity! Open your heart to this divine message, follow the guidance of this noble Prophet, and let the Quran transform your life. For Allah's grace is vast, and He invites you to be among those who receive it—not through wealth or status, but through sincere faith and righteous deeds. Do not let this precious gift slip away, for the greatest loss is to know the truth and turn away from it. Embrace this favor with gratitude, and you will find peace in this life and eternal bliss in the Hereafter.

📜 Verse 2-6 — Al-Jumu'ah

It is He who has sent among the unlettered a Messenger from themselves reciting to them His verses and purifying them and teaching them the Book and wisdom - although they were before in clear error -
And [to] others of them who have not yet joined them. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
That is the bounty of Allah, which He gives to whom He wills, and Allah is the possessor of great bounty.
The example of those who were entrusted with the Torah and then did not take it on is like that of a donkey who carries volumes [of books]. Wretched is the example of the people who deny the signs of Allah. And Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.
Say, "O you who are Jews, if you claim that you are allies of Allah, excluding the [other] people, then wish for death, if you should be truthful."
