Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • حُمِّلُوا التَّوْرَاةَ (were entrusted with the Torah): They were given the responsibility to study, understand, and act upon the Torah.
  • يَحْمِلُ أَسْفَارًا (carries books): A donkey carrying large volumes of books, unaware of their content.
  • بِئْسَ (how evil/bad): An expression of severe condemnation.

Tafsir (Explanation):

Allah presents a striking and powerful parable to expose the reality of those who were given the Torah but failed to live by its teachings. The people addressed here are the Jews who received the Torah, were commanded to implement its laws, and were expected to recognize the truth within it—including the prophecies about the final Messenger, Muhammad (peace be upon him). Yet, when they were entrusted with this divine guidance, they abandoned it. They read it, memorized it, and even taught it, but they did not truly "carry" it—meaning they did not act upon its commands or embrace its call to faith.

Their condition is likened to that of a donkey carrying heavy books on its back. The donkey bears the physical weight of the books but gains no knowledge, understanding, or benefit from them. It does not know what is inside those pages—whether they contain wisdom or mere words. Similarly, these people carried the Torah outwardly, but their hearts were empty of its true essence. They did not let it transform their lives, nor did they submit to what it commanded, which included believing in the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) whose description was clearly written in their scriptures.

Allah then condemns this state severely: "How evil is the example of the people who deny the signs of Allah!" This is a harsh rebuke, for they were not ignorant people—they had access to divine revelation and clear proofs, yet they chose to reject them. Their denial was not out of lack of evidence, but out of arrogance, envy, and worldly desires.

The verse concludes with a profound truth: "And Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people." This does not mean that Allah withholds guidance arbitrarily; rather, it means that those who persist in injustice and oppression—especially the injustice of rejecting the truth after it has become clear to them—close the doors of guidance upon themselves. Their own choices and stubbornness prevent them from receiving divine direction, for Allah's guidance is a mercy granted to those who seek it sincerely and are willing to submit.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This parable is not merely a historical account—it is a timeless lesson for every believer. How often do we carry the Quran, recite its verses, and even memorize it, yet fail to implement its teachings in our daily lives? The Quran is not meant to be a decoration for our shelves or a ritual for our tongues; it is a living guide meant to illuminate our hearts, refine our character, and direct our actions.

Let this verse inspire you to be among those who truly "carry" the Book of Allah—not just by holding it in your hands, but by embodying its principles in your conduct, your dealings, and your worship. When you read the Quran, let it move you to change. When you hear its commands, hasten to obey. When you encounter its prohibitions, turn away from them. For the one who lives by the Quran will find it as an intercessor on the Day of Judgment, while the one who neglects it will find it as a witness against them.

Islam is not a religion of mere words—it is a religion of action, sincerity, and transformation. Be among those who not only learn but also live the message, so that you may be guided by Allah's light and become a beacon of guidance for others.

📜 Verse 3-7 — Al-Jumu'ah

And [to] others of them who have not yet joined them. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
That is the bounty of Allah, which He gives to whom He wills, and Allah is the possessor of great bounty.
The example of those who were entrusted with the Torah and then did not take it on is like that of a donkey who carries volumes [of books]. Wretched is the example of the people who deny the signs of Allah. And Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.
Say, "O you who are Jews, if you claim that you are allies of Allah, excluding the [other] people, then wish for death, if you should be truthful."
But they will not wish for it, ever, because of what their hands have put forth. And Allah is Knowing of the wrongdoers.
