Do they not see the birds above them with wings outspread and [sometimes] folded in? None holds them [aloft] except the Most Merciful. Indeed He is, of all things, Seeing.

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Ṣāffāt (صَافَّات): Birds spreading their wings wide in the air while flying.
  • Yaqbiḍna (يَقْبِضْنَ): They fold their wings back toward their bodies after spreading them.
  • Yumsikuhunna (يُمْسِكُهُنَّ): Holds them up, preventing them from falling.

Explanation of the Verse:

Have these deniers not looked up and reflected upon the birds above them, how they spread their wings wide in the open sky, and then fold them back in perfect rhythm? Who is it that keeps them suspended in the air, preventing them from crashing down to the earth? It is none other than the Most Merciful (Ar-Raḥmān), who sustains all of creation with His infinite power and wisdom. Indeed, He is All-Seeing of everything—nothing escapes His sight, not even the flutter of a bird's wing or the breath of a living creature.

This verse invites every human being to pause and observe the natural world with the eyes of the heart. The birds above you are not held by visible strings or physical supports; they are held by the will of Allah alone. This is a living, daily miracle that repeats itself before your eyes—yet how many of us truly reflect upon it? The One who holds the birds in the sky is the same One who holds your life, your provisions, and your destiny in His hands. If He wills, He can let them fall; and if He wills, He can let you fall into hardship. But His mercy is vast, and His care for His creation is constant.

This reflection is not merely about birds—it is a doorway to recognizing the greatness of Allah and the truth of His message. When you see the perfect order in creation, how can you deny the Creator? When you witness the precision of every movement in the universe, how can you turn away from His guidance? The Qur'an repeatedly calls you to open your eyes and your heart, for faith is not blind—it is built upon observation, reflection, and certainty.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, the next time you see a bird soaring in the sky, let it be a reminder for you. That bird does not worry about its provision, nor does it fear falling—it simply trusts in its Lord, who holds it up. How much more should you, as a human being endowed with intellect and free will, place your trust in the Most Merciful? He who cares for the birds will certainly care for you. Come to the Qur'an, reflect on its signs, and let your heart find peace in the remembrance of Allah. For in His sight, nothing is hidden, and in His mercy, there is no end.

📜 Verse 17-21 — Al-Mulk

Or do you feel secure that He who [holds authority] in the heaven would not send against you a storm of stones? Then you would know how [severe] was My warning.
And already had those before them denied, and how [terrible] was My reproach.
Do they not see the birds above them with wings outspread and [sometimes] folded in? None holds them [aloft] except the Most Merciful. Indeed He is, of all things, Seeing.
Or who is it that could be an army for you to aid you other than the Most Merciful? The disbelievers are not but in delusion.
Or who is it that could provide for you if He withheld His provision? But they have persisted in insolence and aversion.
