Word Meanings:
- Maḥrūmūn (مَحْرُومُونَ): Deprived, denied, or prevented from something; those who are cut off from a benefit or blessing.
Explanation of the Verse:
After the owners of the garden saw it completely burnt and blackened by the punishment that had struck it overnight, they first refused to believe their eyes. They said, "We must have taken the wrong path; this cannot be our garden." But when they looked more carefully and recognised it as their own, they realised the bitter truth. At that moment, their words changed from denial to despair, and they cried out: "Nay, but we are deprived!" — meaning, we have been cut off from the fruit and goodness of our garden, and this is the result of our own intention to withhold from the poor and needy.
This verse captures a profound moment of realisation. The owners had planned to harvest their garden early in the morning so that no poor person could come and ask for a share, as was their custom. They were determined to be stingy and to keep everything for themselves. But Allah, the All-Knowing, saw their hearts and sent a fire from heaven that destroyed the entire garden before dawn. When they arrived and saw the devastation, they first thought they had lost their way, then recognised their garden, and finally admitted: "We are indeed deprived."
The lesson here is powerful and timeless. When a person withholds what Allah has given them — whether wealth, knowledge, time, or any blessing — and refuses to fulfil the rights of others upon it, they are not actually protecting their provision. Rather, they are inviting its loss. The very thing they tried to guard from others was taken from them entirely. Their greed did not preserve their garden; it destroyed it.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, this story is not merely a historical account — it is a mirror for every soul. How often do we hold back from giving charity, from helping the needy, from sharing what Allah has blessed us with, thinking that we are securing our own interests? This verse reminds us that true security lies in generosity, gratitude, and trust in Allah. The owners of the garden learned this lesson the hard way, but they also repented, saying: "Glory be to our Lord! Indeed, we were wrongdoers." And they turned back to Allah, hoping for something better in return.
Let us not wait for our gardens to burn before we open our hands. Let us give freely, speak kindly, and share our blessings — for the One who gave us everything is watching, and His mercy is far greater than any loss we might fear. The Qur'an invites us to be among those who say, "In shā’ Allāh" (if Allah wills), who remain humble, and who never forget the rights of others upon their wealth. For in giving, we do not lose — we gain the pleasure of Allah and the preservation of our blessings, both in this life and the next.
