Word Meanings:

  • رَأَوْهَا (ra'awhā): They saw it — referring to their garden.
  • ضَالُّونَ (ḍāllūn): Those who have lost the way; astray or misguided.

Tafsir (Explanation):

When the owners of the garden set out early in the morning, determined to harvest its fruits while keeping the poor and needy away, they found it utterly destroyed — burnt black and barren, as if it had been reaped by a calamity sent from above. The moment their eyes fell upon this devastating scene, their minds could not accept what they were seeing. In their shock and confusion, they turned to one another and exclaimed: "Indeed, we have surely lost our way!" They believed they had taken the wrong path and arrived at someone else's garden, for this scorched, desolate land could not possibly be the lush, fruitful garden they had left the night before.

This reaction is profoundly human — when faced with a reality too painful to bear, the heart first seeks any explanation that distances it from the truth. But the Quran captures this moment not merely to narrate a story, but to draw a timeless lesson: how often do we, too, fail to recognize the consequences of our own choices? How often do we look at the results of our negligence and say, "This cannot be my doing — I must have taken the wrong path"?

Yet the beauty of this narrative lies in what follows. When they realized that this was indeed their own garden — the very one they had withheld from the poor — they did not persist in denial. They acknowledged their error, turned back to Allah in repentance, and said: "We were the wrongdoers." This is the hallmark of true faith: the courage to face one's mistakes, the humility to admit them, and the sincerity to seek forgiveness.

Dear reader, this story is a mirror for your own life. How many blessings have you been given — wealth, health, time, knowledge — that you have guarded jealously, forgetting that they are trusts from Allah? How many opportunities to give, to share, to help have you let slip away out of fear of loss? The owners of the garden learned that withholding what Allah has given invites His displeasure. But they also learned that sincere repentance opens the door to His mercy.

Let this be an invitation to you: examine your own "gardens" — your wealth, your talents, your relationships. Are you nurturing them with gratitude and generosity, or are you guarding them with stinginess and pride? The One who destroyed that garden can destroy any blessing, but He is also the One who, upon sincere return, replaces what was lost with something far better. Turn to Him now, before the morning comes and you find your own garden burnt — and let your heart say, not in despair, but in hope: "Perhaps my Lord will give us better than it in exchange; indeed, we turn to our Lord with hope."

📜 Verse 24-28 — Al-Qalam

[Saying], "There will surely not enter it today upon you [any] poor person."
And they went early in determination, [assuming themselves] able.
But when they saw it, they said, "Indeed, we are lost;
Rather, we have been deprived."
The most moderate of them said, "Did I not say to you, 'Why do you not exalt [Allah]?' "
