Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • سُبْحَانَ رَبِّنَا – Glory be to our Lord; declaring Him free from any imperfection, injustice, or wrongdoing.
  • ظَالِمِينَ – Wrongdoers; those who have transgressed against themselves by committing sin and disobeying Allah's command.

Tafsir (Explanation):

When the owners of the garden witnessed its complete destruction—the lush fruits and vines reduced to ashes—they first denied it, exclaiming, "We must have taken the wrong path!" But when they realized it was indeed their own garden, their hearts softened and their arrogance melted into humility. The most upright among them reminded them of his earlier advice: "Did I not tell you to say 'If Allah wills'?" And so, in a moment of sincere awakening, they declared: "Glory be to our Lord! Indeed, we were wrongdoers."

This confession was not merely words—it was a profound acknowledgment that the calamity that befell them was a direct consequence of their own actions. They had plotted to withhold the garden's produce from the poor and needy, intending to harvest it secretly at dawn. They forgot that all blessings come from Allah, and that He tests His servants with what He has given them. By this admission, they recognized that Allah had not wronged them in the least; rather, they had wronged themselves through their greed, their stinginess, and their failure to submit to Allah's will by saying "In sha' Allah" (if Allah wills).

This verse carries a timeless lesson for every believer: when trials strike, the first response of a righteous heart is not blame or despair, but *tawbah* (repentance) and *tasbih* (glorifying Allah). The owners of the garden did not curse their fate or question divine wisdom—they immediately turned inward, acknowledged their fault, and purified their Lord of any injustice. This is the hallmark of true faith: recognizing that every hardship we face is either a consequence of our own deeds or a mercy in disguise, and that Allah—in His infinite justice and wisdom—never oppresses anyone.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, how often do we face difficulties and immediately look for someone to blame? How often do we question Allah's decree instead of examining our own hearts? This verse invites us to adopt the attitude of these repentant people: *"Subhana Rabbina, inna kunna thalimin"* — "Glory be to our Lord, indeed we were wrongdoers." This simple yet profound phrase opens the door to forgiveness, mercy, and divine replacement of what was lost with something better. For after their repentance, they turned to Allah with hope, saying, "Perhaps our Lord will give us better than it in exchange; indeed, we are desirous of our Lord."

Let this be a beacon of hope: no matter how severe the loss, no matter how dark the night, sincere repentance and humble acknowledgment of our faults can transform calamity into blessing, and punishment into pardon. Allah loves those who return to Him, and He never turns away a repentant heart. So, when life's gardens burn, let your tongue be quick to glorify your Lord, and your heart quick to seek His forgiveness—for He is the Most Merciful, the Most Forgiving.
