Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Khuluq (خُلُقٍ): This refers to character, moral disposition, temperament, and the inward nature that manifests in outward behavior. It encompasses the entirety of one's ethical conduct and manners.
- Azeem (عَظِيمٍ): Tremendous, magnificent, of immense magnitude and excellence — beyond what can be fully described or measured.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this noble verse, Allah addresses His beloved Messenger Muhammad (peace be upon him) with a statement that stands as one of the most profound compliments ever given to any human being. Allah says: *"And indeed, you are upon an immense character."*
This verse comes as a direct response to the accusations made by the disbelievers of Makkah, who claimed that the Prophet was mad, foolish, or a poet under the influence of jinn. Allah refutes these false claims by affirming the absolute perfection of the Prophet's character. The "immense character" mentioned here refers to the comprehensive moral excellence that the Prophet embodied — a character that was entirely shaped by and in complete harmony with the teachings of the Quran. His wife Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) described this beautifully when she said: *"His character was the Quran itself."* He implemented every command, embodied every virtue, and lived every principle of the Quran in his daily life.
This character included his truthfulness, honesty, trustworthiness, mercy, compassion, patience, forgiveness, humility, courage, generosity, and justice. He was kind to his family, gentle with children, caring for the poor, forgiving to his enemies, and steadfast in the face of hardship. Even his worst enemies acknowledged his moral excellence before he received prophethood — they called him "Al-Amin" (the trustworthy) and "Al-Sadiq" (the truthful).
The word "immense" (azeem) indicates that this character was not merely good or praiseworthy — it was extraordinary, unparalleled, and comprehensive in its scope. It combined all noble traits in perfect balance, without excess or deficiency in any aspect.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, ponder deeply upon this verse. The Creator of the heavens and the earth — the One who knows the hidden and the apparent — testified to the greatness of Prophet Muhammad's character. This is not the praise of a human being, but the commendation of the Lord of all worlds. If you seek to understand Islam, look at the character of its final Messenger. If you wish to draw closer to Allah, follow his example. The Quran itself instructs us: *"And indeed, you have in the Messenger of Allah an excellent example"* (Al-Ahzab: 21).
This verse also carries a beautiful message for every believer: good character is not a minor matter in Islam — it is central to faith. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: *"The heaviest thing on the scales of a believer on the Day of Judgment will be good character"* (Sunan Abi Dawud). So strive to adorn yourself with noble manners — truthfulness, kindness, patience, and humility — for these are the qualities that bring you closer to Allah and to the heart of His Messenger.
Let the life of the Prophet be your guide, and let his character be your model. For whoever follows him in conduct, Allah promises love and closeness: *"Say: If you love Allah, then follow me, Allah will love you"* (Aal-Imran: 31). This is the path to true success in this life and the next.
