Those cities - We relate to you, [O Muhammad], some of their news. And certainly did their messengers come to them with clear proofs, but they were not to believe in that which they had denied before. Thus does Allah seal over the hearts of the disbelievers.

Word Meanings:

(Tilka al-Qura): Those towns/civilizations
(Naqussu 'alayka): We relate to you, narrate to you
(Anba'iha): Their news, tidings, and stories
(Bil-Bayyinat): With clear proofs, evident miracles, and unmistakable signs
(Yatba'): Seals, stamps, or closes off (a metaphor for the hardening of hearts)

Explanation of the Verse:

O Messenger, these towns whose stories have just been mentioned — the peoples of Noah, Hud, Salih, Lot, and Shu'ayb — We are narrating to you their true accounts, not as mere entertainment, but as living lessons for those who reflect and a stern warning for those who persist in wrongdoing. These were civilizations with power, wealth, and grandeur, yet when their messengers came to them with undeniable miracles and crystal-clear proofs of the truth, they still refused to believe.

The remarkable tragedy is that their disbelief was not due to any lack of evidence or ambiguity in the message. The messengers showed them signs that defied the natural order — the ark of Noah, the she-camel of Salih, the fire that became cool for Ibrahim — yet their hearts were already sealed against faith. They had rejected the truth *before* the miracles even arrived, and so when the proofs came, they found no place in their hearts to settle. Their arrogance and stubbornness had created a barrier that no miracle could penetrate.

And this is precisely how Allah deals with those who persist in rejection: just as He sealed the hearts of those past nations who denied their messengers, He seals the hearts of those who reject Muhammad (peace be upon him). When a person repeatedly chooses falsehood over truth, Allah leaves them to their own devices, and their hearts become hardened to the point where guidance can no longer enter. This is not an injustice from Allah — rather, it is the natural consequence of their own persistent choice to turn away from the light.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, pause and ponder: these nations were not destroyed for being weak or ignorant — they were destroyed because they had the truth presented to them clearly, yet they turned away out of pride and attachment to their old ways. The Quran is not telling us these stories to merely inform us of history; it is holding up a mirror to our own souls. Every time you hear the truth and feel that inner resistance — that voice that says "not now," "I'm not ready," or "this doesn't apply to me" — you are taking a step toward that sealing of the heart.

But the good news is that the door of repentance remains open for you today. The seal only comes after persistent, willful rejection. So if you find even a flicker of faith in your heart, nurture it. Respond to the call of truth while your heart is still soft, and let these stories of past nations be a wake-up call — not a distant tale, but a personal reminder that the same sun that rose over the ruins of those civilizations is rising over you today, asking: what will *your* story be?

📜 Verse 99-103 — Al-A'raf

Then did they feel secure from the plan of Allah? But no one feels secure from the plan of Allah except the losing people.
Has it not become clear to those who inherited the earth after its [previous] people that if We willed, We could afflict them for their sins? But We seal over their hearts so they do not hear.
Those cities - We relate to you, [O Muhammad], some of their news. And certainly did their messengers come to them with clear proofs, but they were not to believe in that which they had denied before. Thus does Allah seal over the hearts of the disbelievers.
And We did not find for most of them any covenant; but indeed, We found most of them defiantly disobedient.
Then We sent after them Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his establishment, but they were unjust toward them. So see how was the end of the corrupters.
