Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- ʿAhd (عهد): Covenant, pledge, or commitment—specifically the sacred covenant that Allah took from humanity to worship Him alone and obey His messengers.
- Fāsiqīn (فاسقين): Those who deviate from obedience to Allah; transgressors who break away from the path of righteousness.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this profound verse, Allah—the Most High—reveals a sobering truth about the majority of past nations to whom messengers were sent. Despite the clear signs, the miracles, and the repeated calls to guidance, Allah states that He did not find in most of them any true fulfillment of the covenant they had made with Him. This covenant is the primordial one, embedded in human nature itself—to acknowledge Allah as Lord and to follow His messengers when they come.
The verse goes further to declare that not only did they fail to honor their pledge, but the overwhelming majority were found to be *fāsiqīn*—those who deliberately stepped out of the bounds of obedience, turning away from Allah's commands with arrogance or heedlessness. Their hearts were hardened, their ears grew dull to the truth, and their eyes became blind to the signs around them.
This is a powerful lesson for us today. The covenant with Allah is not a mere historical event—it is a living reality. Every soul bears witness to Allah's lordship, and every messenger who came was a reminder of that sacred bond. Yet, how many of us truly honor that covenant? How many of us live with the awareness that we have pledged ourselves to our Creator?
The verse serves as a mirror, urging us to examine our own lives. Are we among those who fulfill their covenant with Allah—praying, obeying, and submitting—or are we among those who break it, drifting into disobedience and forgetfulness?
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, this verse is not meant to discourage you but to awaken you. The door of repentance is always open, and Allah's mercy encompasses everything. The failures of past nations were not because Allah was unjust to them—rather, they were unjust to themselves. Today, you have the opportunity to be different. You can be among the few who honor their covenant with Allah, who stand firm in obedience, and who strive to please their Lord in every moment.
Let this verse inspire you to renew your commitment to Allah. Reconnect with your Lord through sincere repentance, establish your prayers, and seek His guidance in every affair. The path of righteousness is not difficult for those who sincerely desire it, and Allah promises His help to those who strive in His way.
Remember: the covenant is not just words—it is action. Be among those who fulfill it, and you will find peace in this life and success in the Hereafter.
