Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah Almighty informs us of His divine justice and mercy in dealing with Pharaoh and his people. After they rejected the signs of Allah and persisted in their arrogance and tyranny, Allah seized them with years of severe drought and famine, and He caused their fruits and harvests to diminish. This was not a random punishment, but a purposeful trial—a wake-up call from the Most Merciful. The affliction was meant to soften their hardened hearts, break their pride, and remind them of their utter dependence on Allah, the Sustainer of all worlds.
The wisdom behind this trial was that they might remember their Lord, reflect on their disobedience, and turn back to Him in repentance. When a person is surrounded by ease and abundance, the heart often becomes heedless and arrogant. But when hardship strikes, the soul is humbled, and the veil of forgetfulness is lifted. Allah wanted them to realize that the blessings they enjoyed were from Him alone, and that their rejection of His Messenger, Moses (peace be upon him), had consequences both in this life and the next.
This verse carries a profound lesson for all of humanity: trials and hardships are not always punishments in the absolute sense—they are often divine calls to awaken the conscience, purify the heart, and return to the straight path. The believer, when faced with difficulty, should see in it an opportunity to draw closer to Allah, to repent sincerely, and to renew their faith. For Allah does not wish to destroy His servants; rather, He wishes to guide them, forgive them, and grant them success in this life and the Hereafter.
So let every soul take heed: when the world tightens around you, when provisions become scarce, or when calamities strike, know that your Lord is calling you. He is inviting you to turn to Him, to remember Him, and to seek His forgiveness. The door of repentance is always open, and His mercy encompasses all things. Do not be like Pharaoh's people, who saw the signs yet remained blind; rather, be among those who see the hand of Allah in every trial and respond with humility, gratitude, and submission.
