Explanation of the Verse:
This noble verse delivers a profound and sobering message about the fate of those who reject the truth. Allah Almighty tells us that those who deny His signs — the clear proofs of His existence, His power, and His oneness — and who also deny the meeting with the Hereafter, will find that all their deeds have become utterly worthless. Why? Because the very foundation of accepted deeds is faith (īmān) — belief in Allah and conviction in the Day of Recompense. When this foundation is missing, no matter how impressive or numerous a person's actions may appear, they are like a building constructed on sand: it collapses at the first tremor, leaving nothing behind.
The verse then poses a rhetorical question: "Are they recompensed except for what they used to do?" The answer is clear — they are recompensed precisely and only for their deeds. Since they chose disbelief and denial in this world, their just recompense is the consequence of that choice: eternal loss and the fire of Hell. This is perfect divine justice — no one is wronged, and every soul receives exactly what it earned.
This verse carries a powerful lesson for every human being: the value of our deeds is not measured by their outward appearance, but by the faith that drives them. A deed without faith is like a body without a soul — lifeless and void. Therefore, the believer is called to nurture their faith constantly, to protect it from anything that could weaken or nullify it, and to live with the awareness that every action will be weighed and recompensed with perfect justice.
A Da'wah Reflection:
How beautiful is the justice of Allah! He does not let a single good deed go unrewarded for the believer, nor does He overlook any wrongdoing for the denier. This verse invites us to open our hearts to the signs of Allah all around us — in the heavens, the earth, and within ourselves — and to prepare for the meeting with Him with sincere faith and righteous action. The door of repentance is always open; no matter how far one has strayed, returning to Allah erases the past and gives a fresh start. Do not let your deeds be among those that perish — anchor them in the solid rock of faith, and you will find them waiting for you on the Day when nothing else will avail.
